The purpose of this paper is to examine the political significance of Donghak peasant revolution in the perspective of Hannah Arendt's ‘On Revolution’. To that end, we firstly reviewed the definition and meaning of revolution underlined in ‘On Revolution’, and analyzed the purpose and outcome of revolution described as the frame of thought by Arendt. Main methodology used in this study is literature review. This paper examined whether Donghak peasant revolution corresponds with the definition of revolution by Arendt, and in what way Donghak peasant revolution conforms to ‘On Revolution' in terms of the purpose and outcome of revolution presented by Arendt. The results of this study are as follows: First, this paper contributes to the development and presentation of new perspectives and meanings for evaluating Donghak peasant revolution. Second, it will provide a new framework to remember and further contemplate Donghak peasant revolution and revolutionary spirit.

이 연구의 목적은 한나 아렌트(Hannah Arendt)의 혁명론 관점에서 동학농민혁명이 갖는 정치적 의의를 모색해보는데 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 먼저 아렌트가 혁명론을 통해 강조하고 있는 혁명의 개념과 의미를 살펴보고, 아렌트가 사유의 틀로 제시하고 있는 혁명의 목표와 결과에 대해 분석한 뒤 이를 토대로 동학농민혁명이 갖는 특징을 연구하였다. 이에 대한 연구 방법으로는 기본적으로 문헌연구방법론을 채택하였다. 이 연구의 내용은 첫째, 아렌트가 제시한 혁명의 개념에 동학농민혁명이 부합하는지를 살펴보고 둘째, 아렌트가 제시한 혁명의 목표와 결과를 토대로 봤을 때 동학농민혁명은 어떠한 부분에서 아렌트의 혁명론과 조응하는지를 다루었다. 이 연구의 결과는 첫째, 동학농민혁명을 평가하는 새로운 관점을 제시하고 새로운 의미를 부여하는데 기여하며, 둘째, 이를 통해 동학농민혁명과 혁명정신을 기억하고 사유하는 새로운 틀을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.
