Regarding the role of art, artworks have been discussed in terms of beauty and good; aestheticism and moralism; and, intrinsic method and extrinsic method. And this is also a way to understand art by focusing on autonomy of art and communicability with non-artistic elements based on modern and contemporary concepts. However, understanding art by focusing on artworks reveals too many limitations to convey the view of art based on the ‘cultivation theory,’ which formed the foundation of art discussion in East Asia. Art, in this region, emphasized ‘action (labor)’ more than the ‘result (artwork).’ Furthermore, artworks are fixed, self-identical objects that are newly interpreted and created by each new viewer. For that reason, the entire process of artistic activities, i.e. the structure of value creation through creation → artwork → appreciation, is akin to permanent revolution. Artworks as results are relative and temporary as they are in the artistic process of endless appreciation and creation. Therefore, when understanding contemporary art that encompasses art education, creative activities, and appreciation, it is more reasonable to divide artistic results and artistic processes and approach beauty and good.

예술의 역할을 둘러싼 논의는 작품을 중심으로 美/善, 유미주의/교훈주의, 내재적 방법/외재적 방법 등으로 구별하여 전개되어 왔다. 그것은 근·현대적 개념으로 예술의 자율성과 비예술적 요소들과의 소통가능성을 중심으로 예술을 이해하는 방법이기도 하다. 하지만 이러한 작품중심의 예술이해는 동아시아 예술의 근간담론을 형성해 왔던 修養論적 예술관을 담아내기에는 많은 한계를 드러낸다. 동아시아의 예술은 예술결과로서 ‘작품’보다, 예술과정에서의 ‘활동[노동]’을 보다 중요하게 여겨왔기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 작품은 자기 동일적인 고정된 존재이지만, 새로운 감상자를 만날 때 마다 새로운 해석을 낳으며 창조되는 속성을 갖는다. 그래서 예술활동의 전 과정, 창작→작품→감상이라는 가치창조의 구조는 영구혁명과 같다. 예술결과로서 작품이 끊임없는 감상의 창조라는 예술과정에 놓여 있기 때문에 결과로서 작품이 갖는 특징은 상대적이고 일시적이다. 따라서 예술교육과 창작활동, 작품 감상 등을 포괄하는 동시대 예술 이해에 있어서도 예술결과와 예술과정으로 구분하여 미/선 등의 예술을 이해하는 것이 보다 타당하다고 하겠다.
