The current study investigated on the competence, satisfaction, and grade point average(GPA) of the first-year college students, influenced by changes made in the general education system. The study took place in a four-year university located in Seoul, Korea, from 2007 to 2015. Specifically, three periods were identified: a period before reinstation of department-based system and reorganization of general education(2007-2009), a period after such change occurred and before first implementation of residential college(RC) education(2010-2012), and a period after executing RC education(2013-2015). The results showed that first, competence and the GPA improved significantly across the periods while satisfaction increased only to the second period and decreased in the third period. Second, the interaction between the level of GPA and the periods of the general education system on the amount of self-reported competence and satisfaction had been investigated. Results showed that only the satisfaction has a significant interaction, which means that students with higher grades responded to be more satisfactory about their first year at school overall. However, the higher the grades were, the lower the rate of the decline was in the third period. Lastly, the interaction between the gender and the periods of the general education system on the amount of self-reported competence, satisfaction, and the GPA had been investigated. The results showed that all of the variables had significant interactions. The male students had significantly higher competence and satisfaction reported than the female students, while female students had significantly higher GPA across all periods. Meanwhile, the female students showed higher increase of competence and lower decline of satisfaction in the third period. As for the GPA, the male students showed improvements in the second period. Overall, the results indicate the effectiveness of the changes made in the general education system and suggest future directions.

본 연구에서는 서울 시내 1개 종합대학에서 2007년부터 2015년까지 교양교육시스템의 변화가 대학 신입생의 역량, 만족도 및 성적에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는지 조사하였다. 구체적으로는 교양교육시스템에 큰 변화가 있었던 2010년(학과제 실시와 교양교육개편)과 2013년(RC교육실시)을 중심으로 3개 시기로 분류하고, 학생들의 역량과 만족도, 그리고 성적의 차이를 비교하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 역량과 성적은 분기에 따라 유의미하게 향상되었으며, 만족도는 2분기에서 증가, 3분기에서는 감소하였다. 둘째, 성적의 높고 낮음에 따라 학생들의 분기에 따른 역량 및 만족도의 변화가 유의미하게 다른지를 알아보았다. 그 결과, 역량의 경우 성적과 분기에 따른 상호작용은 유의미하지 않았으나, 만족도 변화는 성적과 분기에 따라 유의미한 상호작용이 발견되었다. 즉, 모든 분기에 걸쳐 성적이 높은 학생들이 일관되게 높은 만족도를 보고하였으나, 성적이 높을수록 3분기 감소율이 낮아졌다. 마지막으로, 성별에 따라 학생들의 분기에 따른 역량 및 만족도와 성적의 변화가 유의미하게 다른지 조사하였다. 그 결과, 역량 및 만족도 그리고 성적의 변화 모두 성별과 분기에 따른 유의미한 상호작용이 발견되었다. 남학생의 경우 모든 분기에 걸쳐 일관되게 여학생보다 높은 역량과 만족도를 보고하였으나, 성적은 여학생이 유의하게 높았다. 여학생의 경우, 남학생보다 역량 부분에서 3분기 증가율이 더 높았으며, 만족도는 3분기 감소율이 더 낮은 양상을 보였다. 성적의 경우, 남학생이 2분기에 더 높은 성적 증가율을 보였다. 본 연구결과는 해당 대학에서 실시한 교양교육제도개편의 긍정적 결과를 보여주며, 추후 교양교육제도변화의 방향을 제시해 준다.
