The present study aims to identify the motivation of the open innovation project from a consumer perspective. This research-in-progress consists of literature review and research model development. We first review the major literature on open innovation to discuss how it is different from previously known organizational innovation processes, and on open innovation participant motivations to categorize their types based on breadth and depth. Then, we propose a research model that integrates the overall motivation of consumers to participate in open innovation projects. In doing so, the motivations are discussed in detail based on their economic/non-economic incentives to identify the relativeness of the significance in motivations. Finally, the expected contributions of the study are presented.
