The purpose of this paper is to examine the value of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) approaches to English education at university level and provide insightful ways to improve the quality of college English in Seminary. The paper introduced the theoretical background of ESP including the potential benefits that can be given to the students to meet their needs of times and education. The premise of ESP is that the syllabus and course materials are developed based on prior analysis of the students’ present needs and specific purposes of their target situations. The current state of ESP implementation in Korea’s universities has been discussed considerably in comparison with ESP courses in Seminary. The need for ESP courses in Seminary is urgent considering the limitation of time allotted to college English curriculum, practicality, effectiveness, and the student satisfaction of the courses in an EFL setting. To cope with various demands of English skills from students and professors, ESP course should be developed from multidimensional needs analysis. Content should also be tailored to students’ needs depending on their professional fields and majors. ESP instructors/practitioners in Seminary should be spiritually healthy and devoted to students so that he/she can interact with students and other professors for constant feedback. In sum, in order to make successful ESP courses, there need to be ESP pioneers who can take on multiple roles with devotion to his/ her work, materials developed according to students’ needs, and active support from other professors and school authorities.

이 글의 목적은 대학교 수준에서의 특수목적영어(ESP) 교육의 가치 에 대해 논하고 신학교 대학영어의 질을 개선할 수 있는 통찰력 있는 제안 을 제공하는 것이다. 먼저는 일반적 목적을 위한 영어(EGP)와 ESP에 대 한 고찰을 통해 시대적·교육적 요구에 부합하는 ESP의 이점을 소개한다. ESP의 기본 전제는 교수요목과 교수·학습자료가 학습자의 현재 영어 수 준에서의 필요와 앞으로 목표 상황에 맞추어 구성되어야 하는 것이다. 현 재 국내 대학에서의 ESP 교과목 실행 현황과 신학교의 경우를 비교하였을 때, 신학교에서 ESP 교육 실행이 뒤처지고 있음이 나타났다. 교육과정 운 영상 시간의 제약이 있는 가운데 수업의 실용성 및 효과성과 학습자의 만 족도를 고려할 때 일반 영어 수업에 추가하여 혹은 대안적 모델로서 ESP 강좌의 도입은 대학영어교육의 긍정적 변화를 야기할 수 있다. 이를 위해 학습자와 교수자의 다양한 요구를 반영한 맞춤형 ESP 강좌 개발을 위해서 다차원적 요구분석이 우선시되어야 한다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 교수법과 교수·학습자료 역시 학습자의 전공과 직업에 따라 요구되는 영어 기능 및 장르 등을 반영해야 할 것이다. 신학교의 ESP 전문실천가(practitioner)는 기존의 일반 영어교육 패러다임을 넘어서 신학교의 교육 이념에 발맞춰 통 섭과 융·복합의 태도와 믿음을 수반한 사명 의식을 갖고 연구자로서, 개 발자로서, 교수자로서 등의 여러 역할을 수행할 수 있어야 할 것이다. 열린 마음으로 학생들과 수시로 소통하며 전공 교수들과 상호작용을 통해 ESP 교육과정 개발과 운영에 관련한 사항들을 수정하고 개선시켜 나가야 할 것 이다. 끝으로 성공적인 ESP 교육과정의 개발과 실행을 위해서는 신학교인 만큼 자신의 일을 헌신적으로 할 수 있는 영적으로 건강한 교수자, 학습자 요구 맞춤형, 학습자 친화형 교수·학습자료/교재, 전공별 교수들과 학교 관계자의 적극적인 지지가 있어야 할 것이다.
