Mate Taryeong[짝타령] features four characters that compose a paragraph of lyrics while two of them are becoming mates, another becomes burden and the other drives a horse. This song was widely included in many song collections before the early 20th century, and is classified as a short song[短歌] in Hankook Gachang Daegye and Gayo Jipseong. Mate Taryeong is also found in editorials of Pansori such as Simcheongga (A Song of Simcheong) and Byeongangsoega (A Song of Byeongangsoe) edited by Shin Jae Hyo and in Gyeongpan-bon 35(manuscript 35 published in Seoul) and several manuscripts of Chunhyangjeon (The Story of Chunhyang). These elements strongly suggest that Mate Taryeong was sung in patterns of short song and pansori. Meantime, in the 1930s, phonograph records had Mate Taryeong in patterns of Gayageum Byungchang[竝唱] and recitation[誦書], which indicates that a Mate Taryeong with the same lyrics was enjoyed in a variety of other genres as well. There is a great deal in the literature to show Mate Taryeong is an old performance repertory of Changwoo[倡優] group. For one paragraph composed by four people, if there is oral sound such as ‘Doong-deong-ji-deong,’ it is an editorial of Gayageum Byungchang, while if there is no oral sound, it is an editorial of short song. It is estimated that Mate Taryeong with oral sound per paragraph as Gayageum and song was later accepted as Pansori, while on the other hand, the lyrics of Mate Taryeong without it as short song was later accepted as recitation, which takes a completely different pattern. In terms of the singing method used for Mate Taryeong, some insist that it was added to Chunhyangjeon as singing the Mate Taryeong in a style of recitation became popular. However, for Mate Taryeong, whose lyrics are found in various materials, it is crucial to comprehensively consider the structure of the lyrics, singing group and situation of the performance to identify the genre. In old times, when singing culture flourished, if a song by some singing group became very popular, other singers in other groups would adopt the lyrics from the song to create a new song in a different genre that featured the same lyrics. In short, this study has revealed the following:Mate Taryeong was a performance repertory of Changwoo group that was sung as short song, Gayageum and song and Pansori. As the song became popular, it was sung as recitation by other singing groups of completely different genres in completely different performance style.

<짝타령>은 두 명의 인물을 짝을 지어 묶고 거기에 한 사람을 웃짐치고 또 한 사람을 말 몰리게 하여 총 4명의 등장인물을 한 단락으로 하여 노래해 나가는 곡으로 지금은 전승되지 않고 있지만, 여러 자료에 실려 있어서 그 가창방식과 전승에 대해 주목되는 곡이다. <짝타령>은 「악부」, 「잡가집」 등 20세기 초에 간행된 많은 노래책에 수록되어 있고, 「한국가창대계」와 「가요집성」에는 단가(短歌)로 분류되어 실려 있다. 또한 신재효본 <심청가>와 <변강쇠가> 등의 판소리 사설에 보일 뿐 아니라 「경판 35장본」과 「남원고사」 등 세책(貰冊) 계열의 <춘향전> 이본에도 <바리가>라는 제목으로 수용되어 있어서 단가 및 판소리의 삽입가요로도 불린 곡임을 알 수 있다. 그런데 1930년대에 발매된 유성기음반에는 각각 가야금병창과 송서(誦書)로 <짝타령>이 녹음되어 있어서 음악적 특징에 대한 분석이 가능하다. <짝타령>에 등장하는 인물은 시대와 자료마다 조금씩 차이가 있으며, 노랫말도 다양하다. <짝타령> 노랫말은 매 단락의 끝에 구음이 붙는 경우와 구음이 붙는 예는 거문고 반주로 노래하는 경우와 가야금 병창으로 부르는 경우로 나누어 볼 수 있고, 구음이 붙지 않는 예는 단가로 부르는 경우와 송서로 부르는 경우로 나눌 수 있다. 전통사회에서는 어떤 가창집단에서 부르는 노래가 크게 유행을 하고 인기를 얻으면 다른 가창집단에 속한 가창자들이 그 노래의 노랫말을 따와서 노래를 하는 경우가 많았으며, 이러한 과정을 통해 노랫말은 같지만 갈래(장르)는 다른 새로운 노래가 만들어져 왔다. 국문학계에서는 <짝타령>의 가창방식과 관련하여 송서(誦書)로 불리는 방식이 크게 유행한 결과 <춘향전>에 삽입되었다는 주장이 있었다. 그러나 본고에서 노랫말의 구성, 가창 집단, 그리고 노래가 불리는 연행 상황을 종합적으로 고려한 결과 <짝타령>은 창우집단이 문인 취향의 노래인 <바리가>를 수용한 후 엇중모리 장단에 맞춰 단가, 가야금병창의 다양한 가창방식으로 부르던 노래로 19세기에 널리 불리던 곡이다. 따라서 20세기 초의 평민가객인 이문원이 부른 송서와는 가창방식이나 전승에 있어서 구별되는 곡임을 알 수 있었다. 요컨대 <짝타령>은 19세기 남도 지역 창우집단의 대표적인 공연 레퍼토리로 단가, 가야금병창, 판소리의 삽입가요 등으로 불렸으며, <짝타령>이 유명해지면서 서울 지역을 중심으로 활동하던 가객 이문원에 의해서 송서로 불리게 된 것이다. <짝타령>을 통해서 조선 후기 가창문화를 엿볼 수 있다.
