The purpose of this paper is to clarify knowledge-based education through the reason of modernism education which is the dominant education paradigm and to discuss the paradigm shift of educational paradigm to holistic education based on relation for postmodernism education. Holistic education can be considered as an alternative approach to solve these problems of modernistic education, and at the same time seeks to restore the wholeness of human being with an emphasis on spirituality and meaning. Human nature is an indivisible unity. What we are convinced of the make-up of our human nature largely determines what we are convinced about our educational philosophy. As a result, the goal of our education today is to overcome the knowledge-centered, narrow-minded human education of modernist education, and as a balanced and harmonious all-rounder of integrated thinking with a subjective consciousness of living in postmodern times, It is to raise human beings who realize and practice of peace.

우리 교육은 모더니즘교육을 지배 교육패러다임으로 교육정책, 교육실천을 실시해 왔다. 모더니즘교육은 이성을 중심으로 한 보편적 자아를 상정하고 지식위주의 인지교육이라고 하는 좁은 의미의 인간을 길러 내는 교육의 입장이다. 포스트모더니즘 교육은 이러한 절대보편적인 자아가 아닌 다양성과 통합적인 인간 이해의 교육을 요청한다. 포스트모던 사회에 모더니즘 인식에 기초한 교육은 여전히 교육현장에서 진행형이다. 관계성을 기초로 하는 21세기 대안적 교육패러다임인 홀리스틱 교육은 통합적인 인간관과 세계관을 바탕으로 개인 내적 및 외적 자아의 통합, 나를 둘러싼 환경과의 생태학적 연계의식, 지금 여기에서 나와 지구적 차원의 상호관계, 상호의존, 상호침투라고 하는 관계의식을 가지고 모더니즘교육의 문제인 이분법적인 분석주의, 요소주의, 과학주의의 한계를 극복하고자 하는 교육적 비전이다. 포스트모던 사회의 교육은 상대주의적 무규범의 ‘~로부터의 자유’는 홀리스틱 교육의 시각에서 ‘~에로의 자유’로의 적극적인 자유로의 성숙한 교육으로의 교육패러다임의 전환이어야 할 것이다.
