This study starts from the question, “Can our understanding of God be furthered through clinical pastoral experiences?” This is the question whether pastoral experience can be a proper source for theology. It has already passed a century since Anton Boisen suggested an empirical approach to theology that starts from the exploration of the inner world. However, its method has not been sufficiently developed yet. I think there are two reasons. First, there is still no clear theological explanation of the relation between the God-human relationship and the pastoral interpersonal relationship. Second, there is still no sufficient clarification on the way how to register human feelings and psychological dynamics as the source of theology. In this study, I have suggested solutions for these problems on the basis of Karl Barth’s analogical understanding of revelation and Jürgen Moltmann’s and Michael Welker’s understandings of the function of the human spirit and the Holy Spirit. My basic argument is that God reveals himself through our interpersonal relationship when we participate and bear witness to the Christ present within the interpersonal relationship. My argument is also that human feelings and psychological dynamics between the two human persons can work as mediation for God’s revelation of his own heart and mind for them. When people participate in Christ’s presence and action through the pastoral relationship, the Holy Spirit’s heart and their feelings for one another interpenetrate and resonate with each other. Consequently, the experiences of pastoral relationship can be an important source of knowing God. In this way, I explore the possibility of clinical empirical theology that seeks to know God through the present experiences of pastoral practice under the guidance of the Bible and the Holy Spirit.
