This study explores the relationship between the Biblical interpretation and the Biblical teaching in Rembrandt’s Biblical paintings. This study asserts that Rembrandt interprets the Bible in terms of literacy criticism and teach the Bible in the dramatic way through Biblical paintings. First, this study analyzes his Biblical paintings in terms of the narrative criticism. His Biblical paintings dramatically and imaginatively teach people Biblical stories through chiaroscuro(contrast between light and darkness) that contrasts characters of two groups. Second, this study insists that Rembrandt uses reader-response criticism as the Biblical interpretation. Rembrandt teaches people how to imagine and feel the Biblical stories through Biblical paintings. Third, this study interprets Rembrandt’s Biblical paintings with the educational criticism. His Biblical paintings help people critically reflect on their lives and make decisions. Finally, this study introduces the Biblical teaching and learning on the basis of “Five Rs (Remembering, Revisiting the text, Reflecting critically, Reinterpreting, Response)” that Blair suggests. This enables learners to interpret and learn Biblical stories in the subjective, imaginative, sensible way.
