The purpose of this thesis is to explore concept of ecological literacy and its educational meanings. Ecology as one of post-modern ideas is an alternative perspective for overcoming crisis in modern society. The philosophy of ecology tries to reflect modernity and then proposes epistemological shift to correlative and holistic world view. Ecological education as new paradigm gives attention to fundamental limits of modern education as well as compensates ambiguity of post-modern education. Ecological literacy represents image of educated mind in ecological paradigm. It is the mental ability to understand ‘connection’ and integrate thinking, emotion, and practice. In education, it suggests a change in understanding of thinking and knowledge, ethic, learning & teaching and educational environment & public concern. As exploring ecological literacy, we can examine desirable roles and characters of education in risk society.

이 연구의 목적은 생태적 교육 연구의 핵심이 되는 생태리터러시의 개념과 그 교육적 의미를 밝히는 데에 있다. 생태주의는 근대의 위기에 맞서 성장한 탈근대 사상의 한 조류로서 근대성의 근본 원리를 성찰하고 대안으로 관계 중심적이고 전일적인 세계관을 세우고자 한다. 교육에서 생태주의는 근대교육의 한계를 근원적 차원에서 반성하고, 나아가 탈근대적 교육사상의 모호성을 넘어서기 위한 전환적 패러다임으로서의 성격을 지닌다. 생태리터러시는 생태주의 교육패러다임에서의 교육받은 사람(educated mind)의 이미지를 구체적으로 나타내는 개념이다. Orr에 따르면 생태리터러시는‘연관성을 파악하는 능력’으로 지적, 정서적, 실천적 역량을 포괄하는 총체적인 정신능력을 뜻한다. 생태리터러시는 교육에서 사고와 지식의 특성, 윤리적 지향점, 교수⋅학습, 공간과 공공성의 문제를 일깨운다. 생태리터러시의 개념과 의미에 대한 탐색은 위험 사회에서 교육의 역할과 성격을 성찰하는 계기를 제공할 것이다.
