Yun Dong-ju is one of the most favorite poets among Korean people. There is increasing academic interest in his life and his poetry. Most researches on Yun acknowledge that he is a Christian and his poems carry Christian ideals. They agree that Christianity has great influence on Yun. But most of these researches have one serious flaw: they don’t ask what types of Christianity influenced Yun. When we consider that many of Yun’s poems were written while he was struggling to apply his faith into practice in difficult situations, it is important to analyse various types of Christianity Yun encountered. Just as any other religions, Christianity is experienced in a specific historical context. The concrete ways how people meet Christianity are diverse. Particularly the time period of Yun’s life was filled with various types of Christian faith which cannot be found in any other places. If we rely on the definition of Christianity from a popular encyclopedia, or if we take today’s common view of Christianity, we cannot discern the profound influence of Christianity on Yun’s poems. We have to carefully examine what different kinds of Christianity influenced Yun in different stages of his growth as a poet and as a Christian. Particularly we have to pay attention to the relationship between faith and practice. This study takes a multi-disciplinary approach incorporating the fields of Practical Theology, Systematic Theology, and Church History. Through this analysis, we will discover that Yun was exposed to diverse types of Christianity in his life. And we will argue that the greatness of Yun’s poetry comes from his ability to compose a unique image of Christianity from these various types. In this image, Yun could maintain the essential core of Christian faith while communicating with people from other religious, national, and historical backgrounds.

윤동주는 한국인이 가장 좋아하는 시인 중의 한 사람으로서 그에 관한 연구는 증가하는 추세이다. 대부분의 연구는 그가 기독교인이고 그의 시가 기독교적 이념을 담고 있다는 점을 중요하게 여긴다. 그러나 지금까지 대부분의 연구는 중요한 한 가지 한계를 갖고 있는데, 그것은 그 연구들이 윤동주에게 영향을 준 기독교가 어떤 것인지에 대해 정확한 분석을 하지 않았다는 점이다. 대부분의 연구들이 기독교가 윤동주에게 영향을 주었다는 것을 확인하는 데까지만 관심을 두었지, 그다음에 물어야 하는 더 중요한 질문, 즉 윤동주에게 영향을 준 기독교가 “어떤 기독교였나”에 대해서는 무관심했다. 특히 윤동주의 많은 시들은 신앙을 삶 속에서 어떻게 실천해야 할지 고민하는 가운데 써졌으므로 그가 어떤 유형의 신앙을 갖고 있었는지를 분석하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 기독교는 다른 종교와 마찬가지로 구체적인 역사 속에서 구현되는 종교이므로 시대와 상황에 따라 다른 양상을 띨 수밖에 없고, 특히 윤동주가 살아왔던 시대는 서양의 기독교 역사에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 여러 독특한 유형의 신앙 형태가 형성되고 발전되는 시기였다. 윤동주가 경험했던 기독교를 백과사전에서 기술하는 일반적인 정의와 동일하다고 여기거나, 2016년 한국 기독교의 모습과 동일하다고 여기는 것은 모두 잘못이다. 윤동주에게 영향을 주었던 매우 특수한 유형의 기독교의 특성을 밝히고, 그 유형이 신앙과 실천의 관계에 대해 어떤 입장을 갖고 있는지를 분석하는 것은 윤동주의 시를 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 전제조건이 된다. 본 연구는 실천신학, 조직신학, 교회사적 접근을 적용한 다학제적 관점에서 윤동주의 생애를 몇 시기로 나누어서 각 시기별로 그에게 영향을 준 기독교의 특징을 살펴보려고 한다. 이런 분석을 통하여 본 연구는 윤동주가 체득한 기독교는 일반화할 수 있는 보편적 이념이 아니라 한국의 근대사의 큰 흐름 속에서 수많은 우연한 요소들이 절묘하게 결합하여 이루어낸 매우 구체적이고 특수한 형태의 신앙 체험이라는 것을 밝히려고 한다. 그리고 윤동주의 시가 기독교적인 핵은 유지하면서 종교와 민족과 시대의 경계를 초월하여 두루 넓게 공감을 일으킬 수 있는 이유는 그가 체험한 다양한 형태의 기독교의 유형으로부터 자신만의 고유한 기독교상을 구성할 수 있었기 때문임을 밝히려 한다.
