In many classes of general biology the importance of introductory chapter has been commonly overlooked. This study was carried out to point out that such attitude can miss more efficient way in performing the course. Many general biology text books were designed to stand out their strengths and introductory chapters summarize the strengths. The summarized strengths are demonstrated in descriptions of life, themes of biology, and scientific methods. Therefore, introductory chapter should be regarded as an essential part to be given lesson. In this manuscript, we stress the importance of biological themes such as cells, genetic information, interaction with other individuals, regulation, relationship between structure and function, hierarchical structure, and evolution. Among these, evolution is the core. These themes should be working as principles among various and huge amount of biological features. Keeping these themes in minds, it is expected that students can reach higher performance in studying biology than before. In addition, this may be helpful for students in obtaining literacy of liberal education, i.e scientific thinking.

많은 일반생물학 수업에서 첫 번째 단원(Introductory chapter)의 중요성은 간과되는 경향이 꽤 있다. 이 논문에서는 이러한 경향이 수업의 효과를 얻는 데에 효과적인 방법을 놓칠 수 있음을 지적하고자 한다. 일반생물학 수업에 교과서로 채택된 많은 책들은 각각의 장점을 드러내기 위해 잘 제작 되었는데 첫 번째 단원에는 이러한 장점들이 잘 요약되어 있다. 생명의 정의와 특징, 생물학의 주제, 과학적 방법 등을 묘사하는 가운데 각 저서들은 자신들만의 장점을 표현하고 있다. 따라서 첫 번째 단원을 수업에서 필수적으로 다루어져야 할 이유가 있는 것이다. 이 글에서는 세포, 유전정보, 개체들 사이의 상호작용, 조절, 구조와 기능의 관계, 생물학의 서열 구조, 진화 등 생물학 주제의 중요성을 강조하였다. 이 중 진화는 핵심적인 주제이다. 이 주제들은 다양하고 엄청난 양의 생물학적인 내용 속에서 생물학의 원리로 간주될 수 있다. 이러한 주제들을 마음에 새긴다면 학생들은 이전보다 생물학 공부에 더 나은 성과를 이룰 것으로 기대된다. 또한 교양교육 소양 중의 하나인 과학적 사고를 습득하는 데에 도움을 줄 것으로 보인다.
