최근 교육과정에서 학생봉사활동과 교과를 통합함으로써 교육적 효과와 봉사의 의미를 살리려고 하는 봉사학습에 대한 관심이 요구되고 있다. 이 연구는 인성교육의 한 방편으로 중등교육과정에 편입된 학생봉사활동에 대해 학교 현장 실행에서의 현황과 문제점을 검토하고, 학생봉사활동 영역에서 이해되고 있는 봉사학습의 애매모호함을 들춰봄으로써, 학생봉사활동과 봉사학습의 애매모호한 경계와 영역을 규명할 필요가 있었다. 우리나라에 처음 도입된 봉사학습의 개념을 다시금 되짚어보고 학교교육과정을 실행하는데 있어 봉사학습의 개념과 특성을 반영하는 확장에 연구의 목적이 있다. 이 연구는 첫째, 선행연구와 연구·운영보고서를 검토하여 학교 현장에서의 학생봉사활동과 봉사학습의 실행 현황과 문제점을 살펴보았고, 학생봉사활동에 대해 교육과정 정렬의 시각에서 교육과정의 목표들을 살펴봄으로써 외국의 사례에서와 같이 교육과정 연계와 정렬된 봉사학습을 논의할 수 있었다. 둘째, 중등교육과정에서 학생봉사활동과 봉사학습의 경계와 영역의 실마리를 찾아내어 양자의 애매모호를 분별하고, 교육과정 연계와 정렬된 봉사학습을 통하여 교육과정에서 봉사학습 확장을 살펴보았다. 이 연구를 통하여 봉사학습 확장이 교육과정을 중심으로 정렬될 수 있다는 사실을 염두에 두면 교육과정에 봉사학습을 구조화할 수 있는 가능성이 열릴 것으로 기대한다. 그동안 학생봉사활동의 아킬레스건인 강제성은 봉사학습과의 만남으로 많이 해소될 수 있을 것이다.
