This study classifies ‘Self’ aspects into contents, structure and process, and analyzes the effects of the characteristics of each “Self” category on social anxiety. Specifically, this study verifies if maladaptive self-focused attention which applies to ‘self-process’ works as a mediating role on the effects of negative self-concept which applies to ‘self-contents’ and self-concept clarity which applies to ‘self-structure’ on social anxiety. For the purpose of verification, 432 college students completed Negative Concept of Social Self Scale, Self-Concept Clarity Scale, Self-Absorption Scale, and Social Phobia Scale. As a result, it turned out that the relationship between negative self-concept, self-concept clarity and social anxiety is partially mediated by maladaptive self-focused attention. That is, while negative self-concept and self-concept clarity have direct influences on social anxiety, they have indirect influences on social anxiety with maladaptive self-focused attention as a medium. Lastly, the clinical implications, limitations of this study, and the needs for the following studies are discusses.

본 연구는 ‘자기(self)’의 측면들을 내용, 구조 및 과정으로 구분하고, ‘자기’의 각 특성들이 사회불안에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 구체적으로, 본 연구에서는 자기-내용에 해당하는 부정적 자기개념과 자기-구조에 해당하는 자기개념 명확성이 사회불안에 미치는 영향에서 자기-과정에 해당하는 부적응적 자기초점적 주의가 매개하는지를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 대학생 432명이 부정적인 사회적 자기개념 척도, 자기개념 명확성 척도, 자기몰입(부적응적 자기초점적 주의) 척도, 사회공포증 척도를 완성하였다. 그 결과, 부정적 자기개념 및 자기개념 명확성과 사회불안간의 관계는 부적응적 자기초점적 주의에 의해 부분매개 되는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 즉, 부정적 자기개념과 자기개념 명확성은 사회불안에 직접적인 영향을 미치면서 부적응적 자기초점적 주의를 매개로 간접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 본 연구의 임상적 함의와 한계 및 후속 연구의 필요성을 논의하였다.
