This study proved through experiment that “the use of the target language as a teaching language for beginner-level language learners in China is most effective for improving the learners’ Korean language skills. The subjects of the experiment were university students in China who had never been experienced in learning the Korean language and were studying the same major at a university in China. The subjects were divided into three classes, and they learned the Korean language for a semester using a different teaching language. The independent variable was ‘teaching language(Korean/Chinese/English)’ and the dependent variable was ‘the difference between the 1st and 2nd assessments.’ Variables controlled in this study for higher reliability and validity of the experiment were ‘teacher’s experience in Korean language education, teacher’s mother tongue, the area of learning, and learner’s experience in Korean language learning, school year, and motive for learning.’ According to the results of this study, the score of the 1st assessment was highest in the class taught in the Korean language, and the difference was even larger in the result of the 2nd assessment. This suggests that the more one is exposed to the target language the higher the learner’s language competency is.

본 연구는 “중국 내 초급 단계의 교수 언어로 목표언어를 사용하는 것이 학습자들의 한국어 능력 향상에 가장 효과적이다.”라는 것을 실험 연구를 통해 증명하였다. 실험 대상은 공통으로 한국어를 배운 경험이 전혀 없는 대학생들로 중국 내의 한 대학에 동일한 전공으로 입학하였다. 이들을 3개 반으로 나누어, 교수 언어를 달리하여 한국어 수업을 한 학기 동안 진행하였다. 독립변수는 ‘교수 언어(한국어/중국어/영어)’로 하고, ‘1차 평가와 2차 평가의 차이 값’을 종속 변수로 하였다. 통제 변수는 ‘교사의 한국어 교육 경험, 교사의 모국어, 학습 지역, 학습자의 한국어 학습 경험, 학년, 학습 동기’로 설정하여 본 실험의 신뢰성과 타당성을 높였다. 실험 결과, 1차 평가에서 한국어로 교수하는 경우에 학업 성취도가 가장 높게 나타났다. 2차 평가에서는 그 격차가 더 벌어져, 목표언어에 많이 노출될수록 언어 능력이 더 향상된다는 것이 밝혀졌다.
