This study is aimed at critically exploring disabilities human rights education currently done in social studies from a viewpoint of disability studies, and suggesting the improvement direction of disabilities human rights education. The view on disability has changed from medical or individual model to social model. Disability studies is an alternative viewpoint aiming at recovery of disabilities at a view of sociocultural away from the framework like an object of the existing medical care, rehabilitation, social welfare, and special education. Social Studies aiming at promotion of citizenship through social cognition has played a key role in human rights education, but the disability human rights education in the Social Studies is based on traditional model of disability, having diverse limitations. From the viewpoint of disability studies, disabilities human rights education in the social studies as follows; first, an issue setting based on social model of disability, second, provision of the opportunity for awakening of the non-disabled centrism, third, the accept of disability culture as minorities and the respect for life of people with disabilities.

본 연구의 목적은 장애학의 관점에서 사회과에서 이루어지고 있는 장애인 인권교육을 비판적으로 탐색하고, 이를 바탕으로 장애인 인권교육의 개선 방향을 제시하는 것이다. 장애에 대한 관점은 전통적인 의료모델 또는 개인모델에서 사회모델로 변화해 왔다. 장애학은 장애인이 직면하는 곤란을 사회시스템에서 찾고자 하는 사회모델을 기본 개념으로 하는 것으로, 기존의 의료, 재활, 사회복지, 특수교육의 대상과 같은 틀에서 벗어나 사회와 문화의 시점에서 장애인의 해방을 지향하는 대안적인 관점이다. 사회인식을 통해 시민적 자질을 육성하는 것을 목적으로 하는 사회과는 인권교육에 중추적 역할을 해 왔지만, 사회과에서의 장애인 인권교육은 장애인의 인권문제를 배려나 시혜의 차원에서 접근하거나 장애인 인권의 중요성과 더불어 인권존중의 가치를 주입시키려는 방향에서 이루어져 왔다는 한계점이 지적된다. 이러한 비판적 성찰을 바탕으로 장애학의 관점에 입각한 사회과에서의 장애인 인권교육은 첫째, 사회모델에 입각한 문제 설정, 둘째, 비장애인 중심주의에 대한 비판적 성찰 능력의 육성, 셋째, 소수 문화로서 장애문화를 인정하고, 장애인의 삶과 실제를 존중할 필요가 있음을 밝혔다.
