Culture provides the context for human development. A growing body of literature on culture and psychological characteristics shows the usefulness of individualism-collectivism dimension in understanding cultural differences across various societies. This article reviewed previous studies on culture and various psychological characteristics and development, and analyzed their implications on child counseling in Korea. As a society which has experienced rapid changes in recent years, Korean culture, with a mixture of individualism and collectivism, poses a difficult challenge for child development. Thus, the need to re-examine the cultural basis of psychological theories and psychological tests which were developed in individualistic societies and to develop counseling and/or education programs for children, parents and teachers to enable them to deepen their understanding of themselves and others in relation to cultural context is proposed.

본고에서는 인간특성 및 발달에 관련된 문화적 이해에 관한 최근연구동향이 한국사회의 아동상담 및 관련연구들에 대해 가지는 함의를 살펴보았다. 개인주의와 집단주의로 구분되는 문화적 차이에 초점을 맞추어, 자아의 개념화와 발달, 관계성 등이 문화적 맥락에 따라 다르게 규정되고 심리적 기능과 다른 관련성을 보이는 점을 조명하였다. 가족주의와 개인주의가 혼재하며 독특성을 보이는 한국사회에서 아동의 자아발달과 적응을 깊이 있게 이해하고 돕기 위해 이론과 측정도구의 문화적 가정을 검토할 필요성 및 아동․부모․교사가 자신 및 타인의 문화적 배경을 이해하며 다양성을 인정․보완할 수 있도록 돕는 상담 및 교육프로그램 개발의 필요성을 논의하였다.
