The purpose of this study is to examine whether self-regulation and self-esteem mediate between negative maternal parenting and negative quality of friendship. We collected data of 558 elementary school students—5th and 6th grade—in Gyeongsangnam-do to examine correlation among the variables. We conducted multiple regression analysis, thereby setting structure mode land examined goodness-of-fit and the influence of individual variable. We analyzed the collected data by SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 20.0 First, there are meaningful correlations among the all four variables included in this study. Negative maternal parenting style has negative correlation with self-regulation and self-esteem; on the other hand, negative maternal parenting has positive correlation with negative quality of friendship. This implies: a child who has low ability to self-regulate would experience negative quality of friendship. Second, we conducted multiple regression analysis to examine whether negative maternal parenting, self-regulation and self-esteem are explanatory variables that lead to negative quality of friendship: the explanation of negative quality of friendship is high in order of self-esteem, self-regulation, and negative maternal parenting; the total explanation is 36.9%, which these three variables account for negative quality of friendship. Third, The goodness-of-fit of the research model was examined as follows: the whole effect that negative maternal parenting influences negative quality of friendship is .488—the direct effect is .187 (38.3%) and the indirect effect is .301 (61.7%). Negative parenting style, self-regulation and self-esteem accounts for negative quality of friendship as 47.0%. Furthermore, as a result of examining the mediating effect between negative parenting style and negative quality of friendship, simple mediating effect (negative parenting style influences negative friendship by affecting self-regulation and self-esteem) and double mediating effect (negative parenting style à self-regulation à self-esteem à negative friendship) are also significant statistics. It is significant that this study examines sequential mediating path of self-regulation and self-esteem based on the structural relations among four variables and the relation between negative maternal parenting and negative quality of friendship. Nevertheless, it is the limitations for this study to depend merely on a child’s self-report, to collect only cross-sectional data. Hence, we need early intervention to reduce a variety of conflicts and problems caused by negative quality of friendship and the educational approaches.

본 연구는 어머니의 부정적 양육태도와 부정적 친구관계의 질에서 자기조절과 자아존중감이 매개하는지 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 경상남도 소재 초등학교 5∼6학년 558명을 대상으로 자료를 수집하여 각 변인간의 상관을 알아보고 중다회귀분석을 실시하였으며 그 결과를 토대로 구조모형을 설정하여 적합도를 검증하고 개별변수의 영향력을 알아보았다. 본 연구에서 도출한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구에 포함시킨 4가지 변인 간에는 모두 의미 있는 상관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 어머니의 부정적 양육태도, 자기조절, 자아존중감이 부정적 친구관계의 질을 설명하는 변인인지를 알아보기 위해 중다회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 부정적 친구관계의 질에 대한 설명력은 자아존중감, 자기조절, 어머니의 부정적 양육태도 순으로 높았고 전체 설명량은 36.9%이었다. 셋째, 어머니의 양육태도를 부정적이라고 지각할 경우 자기조절능력이 저하될 수 있고, 부정적 양육태도와 자기조절능력은 자아존중감과 부정적 친구관계의 질의 선행요인으로 작용할 수 있다는 것을 반영한 연구모형을 설정한 후 구조방정식 모형을 적용하여 분석하였다. 그 결과 어머니의 부정적 양육태도가 부정적 친구관계의 질에 미치는 전체효과는 .488(직접효과 .187, 간접효과 .301)이었고, 부정적 양육태도, 자기조절, 자아존중감 변인이 부정적 친구관계의 질을 설명하는 정도는 47.0%인 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 부정적 양육태도와 부정적 친구관계의 질의 매개효과를 검증한 결과, 단순매개효과와 이중매개효과가 통계적으로 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로 본 연구의 의미와 제한점을 논의하였다.
