The purpose of this study is to consider the implications of disability in South Korean art education based on a critical discussion about disability discourses in South Korean art education. Based on the examination of many researches mainly in art therapy and art education in relation to disabilities, three issues were discovered; the necessity to convert personal perspectives to sociocultural orientation perspectives in terms of interpreting the matter of disabilities; the necessity to promote self acceptance by the people with disabilities; the necessity to look at the art works of people with disabilities beyond the dominant cultural perspectives. As a result, I recommend that; first, curriculum should engage students in considering how media forms the concept of disability; secondly, the voices of the people with disabilities should be encouraged to be included in making art education policy and curriculum; thirdly, disability artist's and disability student's works should be included in the art education curriculum. This study is significant in that it can give readers an opportunity to understand the cultural significances of disabilities, and furthermore this study can strengthen the foundation for changing the perceptions of disabilities through multicultural art education.

본 연구는 우리나라 미술교육에서 다뤄진 장애담론에 대해 비판적 논의를 하고, 이를 통해 장애와 관련하여 현 미술교육에 던지는 시사점을 도출해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는 주로 미술치료와 미술교과 교육활동 분야에서 각기 장애를 다룬 텍스트들에 대한 분석을 통해 이루어졌다. 연구 결과 첫째, 장애를 해석하는 데 있어 개인적 관점에서 사회문화적 관점으로 전환해야 할 필요성과, 둘째, 미술활동을 통해 장애 학생들의 자존감을 높여야 할 필요성, 그리고 셋째, 장애 학생들의 미술작품을 주류의 문화적 관점을 넘어 볼 필요성이 있다는 세 가지 쟁점이 도출되었다. 이를 바탕으로 현 미술교육에 제안하는 아이디어는 다음과 같다. 첫째는 미디어가 어떻게 장애에 대한 개념을 구축하는지 학생들로 하여금 비판적으로 탐구해 보게 하는 내용을 구안해 보는 안, 둘째는 장애인의 목소리를 미술교육의 교육과정 및 정책 수립에 반영하는 안, 그리고 셋째는 장애예술가들과 장애 학생들의 작품을 미술교육과정에 포함 하는 안이다. 본 연구는 미술교육의 장에서 사람들이 장애에 대해 가지는 인식에 대해 통찰할 수 있는 기회를 마련하고, 나아가 다문화미술교육을 통해 장애에 대한 인식을 개선해나가도록 도모할 수 있는 기초를 다지게 한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
