This study is aimed to explore a new theory and practice to construct ecological education through imaginative education. The ecological crisis has been overshadowed by the pollution and collapse of ecosystem. Education has a great responsibility to precaution ecological risk. Education must include ecological literacy as contents of learning. It is the ability to ask ‘what then?’ and to understand connection between self-existence and world, and also the combination of thinking and emotion. For developing ecological literacy, this study focuses on concept of imagination. Kieran Egan, an educational philosopher in Canada, proposes that imagination constitutes the heart of all learning and engaging in imagination provides learners with cognitive and emotional connection. According to him, many useful cognitive tool that promote imagination in mind makes learning more meaningful. Finally, this paper examines connection between imagination and ecological literacy. And then, the study suggests pedagogical methodology for general ecological education through principle of imaginative education.

이 연구는 교육 전체의 문제로서 생태교육의 성격을 밝히고, 총체적인 정신능력인 상상력을 중심으로 통합적인 생태교육을 조직할 수 있는 한 가지 실천 방안을 제시하는 데에 목적이 있다. 인류가 직면한 급박한 생태적 위기 상황을 고려할 때, 생태교육은 더 이상 특정한 교과영역이 아닌 교육 전반의 문제로 확대될 필요가 있다. 통합적인 성격을 가진 생태교육은 지적⋅정서적 능력을 바탕으로 인간과 생태의 연관성을 파악할 수 있는 능력인 생태리터러시를 확장하는 과정으로 정의할 수 있다. 생태리터러시는 사고와 정서를 포괄하는 총체적인 정신능력인 상상력과 크게 맞닿아 있다. Kieran Egan은 학습에서 상상력의 역할과 의미에 주목하여 이를 활용하여 인간의 이해를 발달시키는 상상력교육의 이론과 방법을 창안하였다. 그는 인간의 정신적 발달을 인지 도구의 축적을 통해 세계에 대한 이해를 확장하는 과정으로 파악하고, 각 단계별로 상상력을 활용하여 지적이고 정서적인 학습을 촉진시킬 수 있는 방안을 제안하였다. 최종적으로 이 연구는 Egan의 상상력교육과 통합적인 생태교육의 연관성을 분석하고, 상상력교육의 원리를 바탕으로 생태교육을 통합적으로 조직할 수 있는 하나의 새로운 원리를 제시한다.
