The edict against Christianity in 1614 caused Secret Padres to be banished or martyred. Especially after the edict, no padres were in Japan. Secret-Christians organized secret communities and transmitted baptism, ceremonies, doctrines, prayers, and so on until the revocation of the edict. This period today is called Secret Period(1644-1873). This paper explores whether the sacrament of matrimony in Christian Period(1549-1644) was transmitted in Secret Period. In spite of marriage, the reason of maintenance of secret communities was community intermarriage. According to the historical materials, the sacrament of matrimony was done by most of the Christians. Some transformation of religion appeared because of the long-term absence of padres and the suppression. Nevertheless, many people returned to church after the revocation of the edict in 1873.

614년 전국적인 ‘기리시탄 금교령’이 내려지자 사제들은 잠복 사목 활동을 하다가 추방되거나 순교 당하게 된다. 특히 한 사람의 사제도 없는 상황에서 금교령이 해제될 때까지 신자들 스스로 비밀 조직을 만들어 세례를 비롯한 여러 가지 의식(儀式)과 교리, 기도문 등을 세대를 거듭하여 전승해 온 자들이 있는데 이들을 가리켜 ‘잠복 기리시탄’이라 하고 그 기간을 잠복시대(1644-1873)라 한다. 본고는 기리시탄시대(1549-1644)의 혼인성사가 잠복시대에도 전승되어 왔는가에 대한 고찰이다. 통혼(通婚)에도 불구하고 비밀 신앙 공동체가 유지된 이유는 주로 공동체 내혼(內婚)이었기 때문임을 알 수 있다. 또한 사료를 통하여 살펴본 결과 기리시탄 상당수에서 혼인성사가 이루어지고 있다. 다만 장기적인 사제의 부재와 지속적인 탄압의 영향으로 변용이 나타나기도 하지만, 1873년 해금(解禁)을 맞아 기적적으로 교회로 돌아온 자도 많다.
