Boiconservatism as a position in the ethical debate on human enhancement takes two main claims. One is a moral claim that human enhancement may disregard or violate something intrinsically valuable about human nature. The other is a political claim that human enhancement should be banned or severely restricted. In this article, I tried to make a critical appraisal of bioconservatism. For this aim, I introduced a brief historical review of the conservative tradition and showed major characteristics of boiconservatism with regard to human enhancement. Then I critically analyzed the logic of an appeal to human nature proposed by boiconservatives. Finally I argued that an appeal to human dignity exclusively based on moral intuitions is not powerful assets in coping with the challenges of bioliberalists, transhumanists, and even proponents of converging technologies. Bioconservatives need to engage in human enhancement debate in order to make significant influences on shaping public policy. At the same time, to win the policy debate, bioconservatives should develop explicit and rational arguments enough to persuade the mass and their opponents. If not, their moral intuition about the wrongness of human enhancement may lose its power as a sound moral guidance within liberal societies.

오늘날 인간 향상 문제와 관련하여 생명보수주의(bioconservativism)는 가상적인 포스트휴먼 비 전을 추구함에 있어서 현재 우리가 갖고 있는 존엄성을 경시하거나 침해하는 것을 심각하게 우려 한다. 생명보수주의는 초인본주의(transhumanism)가 내세우는 인간의 기술적 변환은 결국 비인간 화를 초래하고 인간의 존엄성을 침해할 것이라고 비판한다. 이에 이 논문에서는 인간 향상에 관한 생명보수주의의 입장을 비판적으로 분석하는 데 그 목적을 두었다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 이 논문에서는 문헌 분석을 통해 보수주의의 역사적 전개 및 생명보수주의로의 정착 과정에 대해 살펴보고, 인간 향상 논쟁에서 생명보수주의가 취하고 있는 주된 근거인 인간 본성에의 호소 논리 를 비판적으로 분석하며, 인간 향상 논쟁에서 생명보수주의가 취해야 할 바람직한 방향을 제안하 였다. 생명보수주의자들이 도덕적 직관에 안주한 채 향상 논쟁 자체를 거부하거나 혹은 자신들의 도덕적 직관을 대중들에게 설득력 있게 전달하는데 태만하다면, 정책의 변화가 크게 없는 한 융합 기술 옹호자들이나 초인본주의자들이 향상 논쟁에서 기권승을 거둘게 될 것이 분명하다. 생명보수 주의자들은 자신들의 직관이 가진 권위의 손상이 부수적으로 발생한다고 할지라도, 자신들의 직관 을 자유롭고 공개적인 아이디어의 시장에 내놓고 공적 담론과 토론을 통해 그 정당성을 확보해 나 가야 한다.
