The final cause is also a mover for Aristotle, then can we say this cause produces a motion as the efficient cause does? It seems not at least in the animal motion. This paper finds its reason in GC 1.7 where a mover is identified with the efficient cause and the final cause is said to be a mover only in metaphor. And then, I explain why DA 3.10 is not the right source to support the claim for the final cause as an efficient cause. It seems that the efficient cause in his physical theory is not a psychological origin of psychological motion but a psychological origin of physical motion. Moreover, he didn't really want to see the psychological motion as a motion. So it seems inappropriate to insist on the final cause as an efficient cause on the ground that it produces the psychological motion. Lastly, I explain that it is not an underestimation of the final cause to say of it a mover only in metaphor, but is just the opposite.

아리스토텔레스에게 목적인도 원동자인데, 그럼 목적인이 작용인으로서 운동을 일으킬 수도 있을까? 이에 본고는 적어도 동물의 운동에 관한 한 그렇지 않다고 답하면서, 원동자는 본래 작용인만 가리키고 목적인을 일컬어 원동자라고 하는 것은 메타포에 그친다는 『생성 소멸론』1권 7장의 언급을 소개한다. 다음으로 본고는 목적인이 작용인일 수 있다는 주장의 근거로 『영혼론』3권 10장이 사용되기 어려운 이유를 서술한다. 그의 자연학적 이론에서 작용인은 심리적 운동의 심리적 근원이 아니라 물리적 운동의 심리적 근원이라고 여겨지고, 결정적으로 그가 심리적 운동을 운동으로 보길 꺼려했기 때문에, 목적인이 작용인일 수도 있다는 해석의 근거로 ‘목적인이 심리적 운동을 일으킨다’는 것을 제시하긴 어렵다. 마지막으로 본고는 목적인이 메타포로서의 원동자이기 때문에 그 위상이 낮아지는 게 아니라, 그렇기 때문에 오히려 목적인의 중요성이 더 잘 부각된다고 주장한다.
