Japan has many myths and legends which tell us that plagues are believed to a disaster caused by God’s wrath. Surprisingly, when looking at Japanese myths and folklore related with the God of Epidemics, we find that many traditions have a deep relation to those of settlers who came from Korea. This mythology captures both the lives of the settlers from Korea and broader cultural aspects of the era. The myths also describe them more vividly than most historical medical literature. During the early years of ancient Japan, settlers from overseas spread advanced science and technology such as agriculture, metalworking, and porcelain, as well as abstract cultural advances such as deeper knowledge, thought, religion and architectural design. As a result, they were naturally welcomed and respected. However, settlers from overseas were also seen uninvited guests bringing plagues and disasters to the natives who were wary of exotic things. Nevertheless, through myths and folklore we can find that settlers from Korea, embedded in Japanese society, kept their traditional faith and were able to enhance the status of gods to that of guardians of the people, protecting against diseases and disasters as well as bringing blessings. This paper tries to trace the vestiges of ancient settlers from Korea through Japanese myths which originate from Korean residents in Japan. Studying Japanese myths reveals fierce lives of ancient settlers from Korea, which were deeply rooted in the native communities of Japan. Hopefully, this will help develop a more positive relationship between Korean residents in Japan and native Japanese people.

고대 일본에는 역병이란 신이 일으키는 재앙으로 여겨졌음을 알 수 있는 신화와설화들이 다수 전해져온다. 그런데 일본의 역신(疫神)관련 전승들을 살펴보면 공통적으로 한반도, 또는 한반도에서 건너간 도래인(渡來人)들과 깊은 관련성을 지니고 있어 주목할 만하다. 이 이야기들 속에는 재일한인의 원류라 할 수 있는 한반도 도래인들의 삶과 당시의 시대상이 단순한 의학사나 질병사를 통해서는 볼 수 없는 입체적이고도 생생한 모습으로 묘사되어 있다. 일본 고대 국가의 형성기에 도래인들은앞선 농업기술을 비롯한 여러 첨단 산업 기술뿐만 아니라 학문과 사상, 종교와 건축등 다방면의 선진 문물을 전파해 환대받고 존중받았다. 그러나 한편으로, 외래의 것들에 배타적이었던 토착민들에게 도래인은 역병과 재난을 몰고 온 불청객에 불과한존재이기도 했다. 본고는 그와 같은 상황 속에서도 일본의 토착사회에 뿌리내리며,자신들의 신앙을 지켜내고 결국에는 자신들의 신을 단순한 역병을 초래하는 신이 아닌, 병과 재난을 없애고 복을 가져다주는 민중의 수호신으로 위상을 높여간 도래인들의 모습을 설화를 통해 고찰해보았다. 재일한인의 원류라 할 수 있는 한반도 도래인들이 당시 일본의 토착사회에 뿌리내리며 치열하게 삶을 영위해간 모습을 돌아봄으로써, 한일관계의 심층적 연원을 되짚어 보고자 했다.
