Many studies and sciences have been highly developed in the 20th century. They promoted the quality of human life, and changed the human life style fundamentally. Individual freedom and right in Political system, material abundance in capitalist economic system, liberation from the physical labor, treatment of disease, life prolongation, accumulation and exchange of information might be evaluated like as positive sides, as if ideal utopia should be realized. But there are lots of negative effect behind these growth and development at the same time. We experienced twice World war, and yet face with lots of local dispute and civil war, hunger and disease, economic and social inequality, egoism and moral frigidity, dismantlement of family, infringement of human right, global environmental pollution etc. In these crises situation, the 21st century universal ethics is presented in order to promote mankind happiness and prosperity. But there are some critics that new universal ethics has limits of being individual, abstract, and western-centric. My paper aims are as follows : to emphasize that Hyoje as the core of family ethics in oriental confucian culture can be a base that makes up for the weak points of the new universal ethics, ; the social expansion of Hyoje can be helpful to overcome the various ethical crises situations lately, ; and ultimately it can improve mankind happiness and prosperity. To put it concretely, 1) to survey the arguments about the 21st new universal ethics for mankind happiness and prosperity, 2) by the expansion oriental confucian cultural Hyoje ethics from family to society-state-world-things, it can be a consistently penetrated base of universal ethics, 3) in order to reestablish Hyoje ethics more adamantly, we need seriously reflect and accept the critics, 4) and we must harmonize Hyoje ethics with modern demands, and re-explain the essential meaning of Hyoje.

20세기는 인류 역사상 학문이나 과학기술이 가장 고도로 발달하여, 인간 삶의 질을 고양함은 물론 생활방식을 근본적으로 변화시켰다. 자유민주주의 정치체제에서 개인의 자유와 권리, 자본주의 시장경제 체제에서의 물질적 풍요, 테크놀로지 발달에 의한 육체노동으로부터의 해방, 질병 치료 및 수명 연장, 정보의 축적·교환 등은 인류가 추구해 왔던 행복한 이상사회가 실현된 것으로 착각할 만큼 긍정적인 측면으로 평가될 수 있다. 그러나 다른 한편으로 이러한 성장과 발전의 이면에는 적지 않은 부작용과 부정적 측면들도 존재한다. 두 차례의 세계대전, 지역 분쟁이나 내전, 기아와 질병, 부의 불평등, 이기주의와 도덕불감증, 가정구조의 해체, 인권 침해, 지구적 환경오염 등은 인류의 생존 자체를 위협하고 있다. 이러한 위기 상황에서 인류의 행복을 증진하기 위해 21세기의 새로운 보편윤리가 제시되었다. 그러나 새로운 보편윤리가 인류의 행복과 번영에 필요한 보편적 가치와 이념을 담고 있지만, 개별적이고 추상적일 뿐만 아니라, 서양 중심의 논의에 집중되어 있다는 지적도 받고 있다. 본 논문은 동양 유교문화권에서 가정윤리의 핵심이었던 ‘효제’(孝悌)가 21세기의 새로운 보편윤리의 한계를 보완해 줄 수 있는 근본 토대가 될 수 있음을 밝히고, 그리고 가정윤리인 효제의 사회적 확장이 21세기에 대두된 윤리적 문제 상황들을 극복하는데 도움을 주고, 궁극적으로 인류의 행복과 번영을 증진할 수 있음을 밝히고자 하였다. 구체적으로 1) 21세기에 들어와 인류의 행복을 증진하기 위해 대두된 보편윤리에 관한 논의들을 살펴보고, 2) 동양 유교문화권에서 강조되어 온 효제 윤리가 가정의 범주를 벗어나 사회-국가-세계-사물로 확장됨으로써, 보편윤리의 틀을 더 튼튼하게 다질 토대를 제공할 수 있음을 밝혔다. 그리고 3) 효제 윤리를 더욱 심층적으로 재정립하기 위해 필요한 과제로서 효제 윤리에 대한 다양한 비판적 입장들을 진지하게 성찰하여 수용함은 물론, 4) 현대사회의 요구와 조화를 이루어야 할 뿐만 아니라, 효제 윤리의 본질적 의미를 새롭게 재해석하여 알릴 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.
