Recently education for humanities and effects of it have been greatly emphasized. However, there has been no empirical study focusing on effects of humanities educationon police performance. Thus, this study attempted to fill the vacuum in the literature andto empirical analyze effects of humanities education on police job performance using datacollected from 321 police officers in South Korea and Japan. Findings showed thatknowledge and refinement in humanities increased overall police job performance, andthey also enriched sense of vocation in policing and job satisfaction. However, multiplegroup analysis between South Korea and Japan showed that these findings does not holdin South Korea. Overall, in comparison between Korea and Japan, the results suggestedthat knowledge and refinement in humanities for police officers who work in policestation and who meet citizens face-to-face enhance police job performance, and theknowledge and refinement enriches sense of vocation in policing, in turn increases jobsatisfaction. Based on the results, police implications have been discussed.

최근 인문학 및 인문소양에 대한 사회적 관심과 요구가 높아지고 있다. 인문소양에 대한 연구는 인문학(문학, 철학, 역사 등) 분야에서 상대적으로 많이 진행되었지만, 경찰의 업무능력에 대한인문소양의 영향에 대한 실증적인 연구는 동서양을 막론하는 선례가 없는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 인문소양이 경찰의 직무능력에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하여, 인문학 교육의 필요성과 그 성과 및 경찰의 바람직한 미래인력 확충을 위한 정책제언을 제시하고자 하였다. 또한, 국내대학에서 실시되는 인문소양 교육이 경찰실무에서 얼마나 큰 영향을 갖고 있나를 비교하기 위하여, 국내 경찰조직과 유사한 일본의 경찰과 이를 비교하기 위하여 한국과 일본 경찰관 321명으로부터 설문데이터를 수집하고 분석하였다. 분석 결과를 종합하면, 시민과 직접 접촉하며 치안서비스를 제공하는 경찰관의 경우 인문소양이 높을수록 경찰 직무능력 또한 높은 것으로 나타났으며,인문소양 계발에 지속적 노력을 기울이는 경찰관은 더 높은 직업에 대한 소명의식을 갖고, 더 높은 직무만족도를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 정책적 제언을 제시하였다
