The purpose of the study was to investigate effects of writing upon children's empathic ability. The experimental group was one class of six classes of the 4th year of 'D' Elementary School, Eumseong-gun Chungcheongbuk-do, while the control group was another one class with homogeneity of empathic ability. The experimental group did 16 terms writing program, while the control group took no action. Post test of empathic ability was conducted after writing program. The author designed writing program depending upon sub factors of empathy to be given consultation on validity and reliability from not only one person having master degree holder of children literature but also three members of the Association of Writing Education and Research of Korea. The findings were as follows. All of four variables had significant difference at post test of empathy ability of both groups. In particular, score of empathic arousal of affective factors of experimental group rose very much. In other words, the children expressed inner thought to understand another children's mind. As such, the writing program helped experimental group children improve empathic ability

본 연구의 목적은 글쓰기가 어린이의 공감능력에 미치는 영향을 알아보는 것이다. 이를 위해 충북 음성군 D초등학교 4학년 학급 6개 중 한 학급을 실험집단으로 하고, 공감능력의 동질 성이 확보된 다른 한 학급을 통제집단으로 설정하여 연구를 진행하였다. 실험집단에는 16회 기의 글쓰기 프로그램을 실시하고, 통제집단에는 아무런 처치를 가하지 않았다. 글쓰기 프로 그램이 끝난 후 공감능력 사후검사를 실시하였다. 글쓰기 프로그램은 공감의 하위 요소에 따 라 연구자가 구안하고 아동문학 석사학위 소지자 1인과 한국글쓰기교육연구회 회원 3인의 교사로부터 타당도와 신뢰도에 대한 자문을 받았다. 연구 결과, 실험집단과 통제집단의 공감 능력 사후검사에서 공감능력의 하위 변인 네 가지 모두에서 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있 는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 정의적 요소인 공감적 각성에서는 실험집단의 점수 상승이 큰 것 을 알 수 있다. 이는 자신의 속마음을 털어놓게 되면서 다른 사람의 마음도 함께 이해하게 되었음을 보여주는 결과이다. 이 결과에서 보이는 것처럼 글쓰기 프로그램은 실험집단 어린 이들의 공감능력을 향상시키는데 효과가 있다고 할 수 있다.
