This longitudinal study investigates female marriage immigrants’ life experiences and their children’s education in multi-cultural families. Ethnography was adopted as a methodological lens, and in-depth interviews and participatory observation were used as methods. Five participants were involved in the study from August to September 2013. The collaboration with a co-author in analysing and interpreting the collected data assured the internal validity of this research. The findings are as follow: First, female marriage immigrants were struggling due to the communication difficulty, the patriarchal culture, and the inhospitality from family members. Second, the children’s education focussed on Korean language, and due to the limit in their mother tongue language use they could not emotionally support their children at home. The findings suggest, first, a better organized social support system in public policy is urgent. Second, in practice, more people should be included in the recipients by widening the scope of applicants. Third, it indicates the urge for policy makers and main stream population’s changes in viewpoints.

본 연구는 다문화가정 여성결혼이민자의 삶과 그들의 자녀교육이 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지를 질적으로 탐색한 것이다. 참여관 찰과 심층면담을 통해 2008년 수행된 연구 의 연장선상에서 2013년에 그들의 삶의 궤 적을 추적하여 종적으로 기술하였다. 본 연 구의 결과는 첫째, 다문화가정 여성결혼이 민자의 삶의 과정은 전반적으로 의사소통의 어려움, 가부장적인 억압과 차별, 가족구성 원들의 냉소적 분위기로 인해 순탄치 않은 것으로 밝혀졌다. 둘째, 다문화가정에 대한 정체성 부분은 결 혼이민자와 그 자녀로 구분해서 살펴봄으로 써 세대 간의 정체성 인식의 차이를 살펴보 았다. 셋째, 여성결혼이민자들은 자녀들의 한국어 교육에 온 정성을 쏟지만 기대만큼의 실효 성을 거두지 못하고 있었다. 더욱이 가정 내에서 자신의 모국어 사용마저 제한되면서 자녀들과 충분한 정서적 교감을 할 수 없어 자녀교육에서 이중고에 시달리고 있는 것으 로 나타났다. 이런 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 구체 적이고 체계적인 다문화 정책과 지원시스템 구축, 다문화가정의 교육수혜자 확대, 그리 고 가장 근본적으로 정책 실행자와 주류사 회 구성원들의 의식변화가 절실함을 역설하 였다.
