Hannah Arendt, who is considered one of the most prominent political philosophers from the 20th century, delved deep into the subject of totalitarian absolute evil symbolized by Auschwitz. She introduced the conviction of the Nazi's crimes in the name of humankind, in her thesis of the banality of evil in which she claims crimes against mankind originate from the thoughtlessness of common people and not from madness or satanic motives. I approached this theme from the differing perspective that ideological motives are crucial in causing absolute evil, disagreeing with Arendt. When considering the structure of the perpetrators' minds, evil committed by thoughtlessness is only part of the story and error in belief may be the kernel of the matter. Controversy over the ethics of responsibility is also interrelated with the latter. In spite of Arendt's insufficient thesis, there are many theoretical resources that answer my question throughout her writings. I will reorganize the logic of prognosis and prescription of ideological massacre, focusing on Arendt's theory of revolution and judgement. Thereafter I examined whether it is possible to put the two contrasting perspectives together.

20세기의 걸출한 정치사상가 중 한 사람으로 평가되는 한나 아렌트의 문제의식은 아우슈비츠로 상징되 는 전체주의 절대악에 대한 성찰이었다. 그는 악의 평범성이라는 명제를 통해 나치의 반인륜적 범죄가 광기 나 악마적 동기가 아닌 정상적 인간의 무사유에서 비롯되었다고 설파한 후 인류의 이름으로 단죄할 것을 주 장하였다. 필자는 아렌트의 입장과 달리 리더의 이데올로기적 동기가 절대악의 발생에 큰 역할을 한다는 관 점에서 이 문제에 접근했다. 가해자의 구조를 염두에 둘 때 무사유로 인한 죄악은 전체의 일부분에 불과하며 신념의 오류가 사태의 핵심일 수 있다. 책임윤리 논쟁의 본령 역시 주로 후자를 문제 삼아왔다. 그러나 아렌 트의 불만족스러운 가설에도 불구하고 그의 저술 도처에는 상기의 문제제기에 해답을 줄 수 있는 여러 이론 자원들이 산재해 있다. 필자는 특히 혁명론과 판단의 개념에 초점을 맞추어 이데올로기적 학살에 대한 진단 과 처방의 논리를 재구성함으로써 아렌트의 정치이론이 절대악의 성찰에 있어서 행위자와 체제, 기획자와 집행자, 지도자와 대중 모두를 포섭하는 모두스 비벤디(modus vivendi)가 가능한지 여부를 검토하였다
