Metaphor has been used for decades to facilitate the change and growth of clients in counseling, and more recently to educate and supervise the counselor-in-training. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of metaphors in the counselor training and supervision. Specifically, researcher have attempted to review the theoretical rationale and the hypothesized effectiveness of the use of metaphor, and to examine the research-based evidence of it's effectiveness, in regards to using a variety of metaphors in the counselor training and supervision. Findings of this study suggested some implications for the counselor training and supervision and the future research. First, using metaphor in counselor training and supervision the supervisors have expected it would contribute to improving the professional ability of supervisees and to developing their identity as a counselor, which has recognized as the key goal of the counselor training and supervision. Second, the metaphor has been used in various forms in counselor training and supervision, as in counseling and psychotherapy process. Someone prefer to the stories such as myths, fables, and fairy tales, while others prefer to the non-verbal techniques such as environmental metaphors and metaphorical drawing. Also, some supervisors tend to suggest directly their own metaphors in the supervision session, but others try to use the supervisee-generated metaphor to facilitate their insights and changes of the process of intervention and supervision. Third, a few researchers has attempted to empirically explore the effectiveness of the metaphors used in counselor training and supervision, but failed to take a clear conclusion. Based on these results, this researcher call the attention and research on using the various types of metaphor for the counselor training and supervision, especially regarding to counseling for children.
