In a variety of art and design areas, it is demanded to practice autonomous thinking pursing productivity as well as imagination not being restricted to the ordinary recognition system trapped in fixed ideas. Therefore, this study establishes a theoretical system about ambiguity which extends meaning richly and also opens the possibility of polysemous analysis and examines the forms, meanings, and effects of ambiguity found in a variety of art areas. To approach ambiguity more systematically, the researcher has investigated the grounds of ambiguity with regard to poetic language found in William Empson’s and found that the application of rhetoric exerts significant influence in it. In order to examine signification exhibited through rhetorical approaches and rhetorical expressions working in detail, the researcher selected as the subjects of analysis a book design and two posters made by the students of design from the researcher’s class. To sum up the conclusions of this research, ambiguity extends its semantic area in different forms covering all the areas of art and has value as a tool that intervenes in receivers’ active participation. Also, in poetic language, rhetorical approaches in language applied to the forms of ambiguity have both associative and emotional meaning in visual language, too, and enhance the understanding and effect of cognitive approaches. Hence the development of contents based on such ambiguity draws well-established contents and the expression of creativity through signification. Through visual communication design education, students get to overcome visual interruptions as well as limitations of thinking with this methodology and recognize the necessity of the system of thinking and the conceptual system. In addition, they will be able to realize the improvement of their approaches as well as expressive methods in the design process based on the utility of ambiguity. To attain this, it is important for them to accumulate knowledge and elevate insight as a designer who can approach a problem multilaterally with a broad view and also recognize the necessity of thinking and conceptual systems.

다양한 예술·디자인 영역에서는 고정관념에 사로잡힌 일상적인 인식체계에서 벗어난 다양한 생산력과 상상력을 추구하는 자율적인 사고의 중요성이 요구되어지고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 의미를 풍부하게 확장하여 다의적 해석의 가능성을 열어주는 모호성에 대한 이론적 고찰을 통해 여러 다양한 예술 분야에 나타난 모호성의 형태·의의·효과를 살펴보았다. 보다 체계적인 모호성에 대한 접근을 위해, 윌리엄 엠프슨(William Empson)의 <모호성의 일곱 가지 유형>에서 시적언어에 나타난 모호성의 근거를 살펴보았고, 그 안에서 수사법의 적용이 큰 영향을 미친다는 것을 파악할 수 있었다. 세부적으로 작용하는 수사학적 접근방식과 표현방법을 통해 발휘되는 의미작용을 살펴보기 위해, 연구자의 수업 안에서 선별된 시각디자인과 학생들의 인쇄물 북 디자인 1점, 포스터 2점의 프로젝트 결과물을 분석 대상으로 한정하였다. 본 연구의 결론을 정리하면, 예술 분야 전반에 걸쳐 모호성은 서로 다른 형태로 의미영역을 확장시키고, 수용자의 참여를 적극적으로 이끌어내는 도구로서의 가치를 지니고 있다. 또한, 시적언어에서 모호성의 유형에 적용된 언어에서의 수사학적 접근은 시각언어에서도 연상적·정서적 의미를 부여해 인지적 접근의 이해와 효과를 높여준다. 이러한 모호성에 기반을 둔 콘텐츠의 진행은 잘 구축된 콘텐츠와 의미작용에 의해 창의성이 발현됨을 파악할 수 있었다. 시각디자인 교육 안에서 학생들은 이러한 방법론을 통해 시각적 단절과 사고의 한계를 극복하여 사고체계와 개념체계의 필요성을 인식하고, 모호성을 근거로 디자인 프로세스 상에서 접근방식과 표현방법의 향상을 이루어낼 수 있을 것이다. 이를 위해, 넓은 시야를 가지고 다각도로 문제에 접근할 수 있는 디자이너로서의 소양을 축적하고, 통찰력(Insight)을 키워나가 사고·개념 체계의 필요성을 인식해 나감이 중요하다.
