The present study attempts to clarify the success factors of Shin, Kyung-sook’s novel, Please Look After Mom, in the international market by focusing on Kim, Chi-young’s translation. After its publication in 2011, the novel has achieved a great success in the international market and were favorably reviewed by both readers and critics. One of the most popular comments of the translated version of the book is regarding the fluency and readability. Just like Kim, Chi-young intended, the book was read as if it was originally written in English. The success of the book has received a significant amount of attention in the domestic market, and the book was praised for brightening the future of Korean literacy in the overseas market. The present paper suggests that one of the key success factors of the book is the use of well-planned translation strategy, and by analyzing it we can give much implications to translators of Korean literature. To that end, the current paper analyzed the book by comparing Korean and English version. Examples were given in the paper to help understand various strategies used in the translated version of the book. As a result, key strategies of domestication were found including: replacing initials with actual names of cities; changing tenses; dividing paragraphs; omitting/adding words; ignoring the use of dialect. Meanings and implications are also discussed.

신경숙의 『엄마를 부탁해』는 ‘어머니’라는, 자칫 진부할 수 있는 주제를 가지고 경이로울 수준의 독자 반응을 얻어내며 연구자들과 언론의 관심을 집중시켰다. 그 번역본 Please Look After Mom은 원본과 마찬가지 로 해외에서도 해당 작품의 2인칭 서술 방법의 특이성과 효과, 그리고 ‘엄마에 대한 그리움’이라는 흔한 주제를 새로운 관점으로 풀어간 부분으로 관심을 받았다. 연구자들은 한국적인 감성을 바탕으로 한국어로 쓰인 문학 작품이 번역을 통해 세계시장에서 소정의 공감을 얻기 위해서는 도착어(到着語)를 사용하는 이들과 우리가 사용하는 공통적인 문법, 또는 대체될 수 있는 문법이 무엇인지 파악해야 하며, 원서(原書)가 가진 문화적인 의미를 분석하고 그에 따른 전략적인 번역을 해야 한다고 주장한 다. 김지영의 번역서는 이러한 전략의 하나인 ‘자국화(domesticating)’에 성공한 대표적인 사례라고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 해당 번역서에서 (1) 어떤 ‘변형-첨가-누락’이 나타나고, (2) 번역가의 의도는 무엇이며, (3) 이러한 편집이 어떤 효과를 가지는지 분석하고 이를 토대로 우리 문학이 세계인에게 더욱 큰 공감을 얻을 수 있는 방안을 고찰하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 분석 결과 시제 변형, 단락과 단어 변형, 도시명 첨가, 사투리 누락의 4가지 패턴이 나타났다. 끝으로 분석결과의 의미와 실질적 함의가 논의되었다.
