This study explored the issues in the [Literature] textbook in accordance with 2011-revised Korean language curriculum from the viewpoint of pursuing communication by teaching classic novel. For this, the status of classic novels in the [Literature] textbook published in 2014 is given first. Next, the issues faced by the [Literature] textbook are explored by focusing on ‘content system and standards of achievement’ and ‘learning activity’. First, there are 32 appearances of 15 classic novels (2 to 5 appearances each) in 11 kinds of high school Literature textbooks, which were newly published in 2014 in accordance with the 2011-revised curriculum. Since there were 54 appearances of 25 classic novels in the textbooks in accordance with the 2009-revised curriculum, it is substantial decrease. The result of exploration based on standards of achievement suggested that there were deviations by area. In other words, the areas of ‘accommodation and production of literature’ and ‘the scope and history of Korean literature’ leaned toward knowledge education; while the area of ‘literature and life’ focused on communication and experience. Therefore, balanced allocation of classic novels by area is required in the classic novel teaching for communication. Since there were multiple cases of incorrect learning activity which were made without considering standards of achievement, good preparation of learning activities based on detail understanding on standards of achievement is also necessary.
