Influence of Youth Internet Game Addiction on ADHD and Academic Achievement - Focusing on Elementary School Students in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Region -

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of youth Internet game addiction on their ADHD symptoms and academic achievement. In this study 898 4-6th grade elementary school students from 5 schools in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi educational regions participated. They were surveyed about their Internet game addiction level, inattention and hyperactivity/impulsiveness symptoms, and academic achievement. The data were analyzed by structural equation modeling. Results indicated that the Internet game addiction increased both the inattention and hyperactivity/impulsiveness symptoms. Particularly, the negative influence on the inattention symptom was more serious than that on hyperactivity/impulsiveness symptoms. While the hyperactivity/impulsiveness symptoms did not influence the academic achievement, inattention symptom negatively influenced the academic achievement. The Internet game addiction level also negatively impacted on the academic achievement in two ways. First, the Internet game addiction level directly gave negative influence on the academic achievement. Second, the Internet game addiction level gave negative impacts indirectly on the academic achievement through the inattention symptom.
