Autonomy and publicity are the foremost problems that the Christian schools will have to grapple with. Until now, discourse on the Christian school had been adjusted to focus on the issue of freedom or autonomy due to Korea's unique situation. This can be seen as the natural result of a situation in which the Christian church was restricted from executing its original purpose due to government-directed educational policies. Discussion on this topic will have to resume in the future. Yet the Christian school should also focus on is its public function. Becoming preoccupied with the issue of freedom or autonomy would only emphasize half of the Christian school's original purpose. Thus, the issue of public function is the otherhalf responsible for carrying out the purpose of Christianschools. There is need for understanding that the two conceptsare not conflicting, but ones that reinforce each other, whileincreasing our interest and discussion on the latter. Moreover, strengthening the public function of theChristian school will be a crucial way for the Korean churchto overcome its current lack of social consciousness. Thoughthe church and home are important educational places tonurture public faith or spirituality, if the Christian school doesnot become involved, such education will not be administeredas effectively. We need to realize the importance of the publicfunction of the Christian school in reforming the Koreanchurch and continue necessary discussion and action. Inthis vein, this study strives to define the tasks needed forthe Christian school to pursue public function or publicresponsibility and suggest theological foundations needed toundertake such task. In this study, the term public function is used to describeboth the descriptive and normative dimensions. Consequently,it deals with the definition of public function and what kindof public functions need to be pursued. It will first discusspublic function in terms of its concept, the public function ofthe school, and the public function of a Christian school as aprivate school. Then it will divide the types of public function313Shin Geun Jang Theological debate of the publicity of Christian School:Dialogue with the perspectives of public theologymanifested in the Scriptures, church history, and theological history into: 1) forming a just and equal communal life, 2) transforming unjust reality, 3) doing apologetic and dialogical tasks. This study will then, from the perspective of the theology of Christian education, discuss the theological foundations and understanding of public function through the theories of Christian educators and religious educators of the 20th century. Afterwards, the study will pose suggestions for important issues related to the execution of public responsibility of Christian schools in today's society and by interaction with public theology as its foundation.

자율성과 공공성의 문제는 기독교학교가 풀어나가야 할 가장 중요한과제이다. 지금까지 기독교학교에 대한 논의는 우 리나라의 특수한 현실로인하여 주로 자율성의 주제에 초점을 많이 맞추어왔다. 정부 주도의 교육정책으로 인하여 기독 교학교가 본래의 설립목적을 제대로 실현해 나가지못하는 상황에서 이는 당연한 결과라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이에 대 한 논의는 앞으로도 계속 이루어져야 할 것이다. 그러나 기독교학교가 동시에 노력을 기울여야 할 내용은 바로 공공성 에 대한 기여의 문제이다. 기독교학교가 자율성의 문제에만 매몰된다면 사실상 기독교학교의 원래 설립정신을 살려나 가는 데 있어서 절반만을 강조하는 것이 되기 때문이다. 우리가기독교학교들의 설립이념과 목적을 다시 한번 자세히 살 펴보면 예외 없이그 속에 자율성과 더불어 공공성의 차원이 반드시 포함되어 있음을 발견하게 된다. 따라서 공공성의 문제는 기독교학교의 설립이념과 목적을 온전하게 실현하기 위한 또 다른 반쪽이다. 이제 양자의 관계를 서로 대립적으 로볼 것이 아니라 서로가 서로를 강화시켜주고 상승시켜주는 관계로 바라보면서 후자에 대한 관심과 논의가 지속적이 고 체계적으로 이어져야 할 것이다. 더 나아가 기독교학교의 공공성을 강화해 나가는 문제는 현재 한국교회가 경험하고 있는 대사회적 위기를 극복해 나가는 데 있어서 매우 중요한 작업이라 할 수 있다. 교회와 가정이 공적신앙을 양육해 나 가는 중요한현장이기는 하지만 기독교학교가 여기에 연계되지 않으면 그 효과는 반감될 것이다. 기독교학교의 설립목 적을 온전히 실현해 나가고 한국교회의 지속적인 개혁을 위하여 기독교학교의 공공성 실현이 매우 중요한 과제임을다 시 깨닫고 이에 대한 지속적인 논의와 실천이 이어져야 할 것이다. 이러한 것을 염두에 두고 본 연구에서는 오늘의 상황에서 기독교학교가 공공성을 추구하고 공적 책임을 바르게 수행하 기 위한 과제가 무엇인장신근 기독교학교의 공공성에 대한 신학적 논의: 공공신학적 관점과의 대화 275지를 살펴보고 이를 위한 신학적 기초를 제안한다. 여기에서 사용되는 공공성이라는 개념은 기술적(descriptive) 차원과 규범적 차원 모두를 포함하는 것으로 사용된다. 따라서 공공성이 무엇이며 어떠한 공공성이 추구되어야 하는가를 모두 다룬다. 이를 위하여 먼저 학교의 공공성에 대한 논의를공공성의 개념, 학교의 공공성, 사립학교로서 기독교학교의 공공성 등으로나 누어서 살펴본다. 다음으로 성서, 교회사, 신학의 역사에서 나타나는 공공성의 유형을 1) 정의롭고 평등한 공동 삶의 형 성 차원, 2) 현실개혁적 차원, 3) 변증적이며 대화적 차원 등으로 분류하여 고찰해본다. 이어서 기독교 교육신학적 차원 에서 20세기의 대표적인 기독교교육학자 또는 종교교육학자들의 공공성 이해와 그 신학적 기초를 논의한 후에, 오늘의 상황에서 기독교학교의 공적 책임수행과 관련된 주요한 주제들과 이를 위한 신학적 기초를 공공신학과의 대화를 통하 여 제안한다.
