This study aims at exploring the meaning of “Baduk Metaphor” which is defined as comparing happenings in society to Baduk and borrowing Baduk terminology for current language. The results are as follows: First, the culture of talking about worldly affairs by Baduk is widespread in Korean society. Comparison to Baduk is conducted not only in politics or quarrels characterized by being strategic and combatant, but also in various fields like faith, schooling, investing in stocks, etc. This fact reveals that Baduk metaphor is being extensively used. Mass media use over 30 terms of Baduk for describing social phenomena, such as opening, joseki, 자충수, order of moves, and so forth. The most frequent terms mong them are the names representing the feature of moves: excellent move, bad move, unreasonable move, 승부수, etc. Third, speaking of worldly affairs by Baduk metaphor is caused by the recognition of similarity of Baduk and life, the need for comparing through intimate things, the use of euphemism by means of Baduk metaphor, and publicity of Baduk in Korean society. The mass media perceive the effect of the euphemism, while the public seem to feel the effectiveness of persuading some logic through Baduk metaphor. Fourth, in view of general public, Baduk metaphor means facilitating the understanding of social phenomena and acquiring implications through the game of Baduk. If the game helps people comprehend complicated social happenings, Baduk metaphor is in itself significant, and further if it gives some useful implications like lessons of life or enlightenment, the game provides double effects. Fifth, the field of Baduk has a meaning of showing fans of Baduk a novel product different from the existing ones. It reveals the potential as a cultural product by comparison and satire, beyond the dimension of Baduk marketing as a leisure and sports. It can also be a tool for studying the Koreans’ way of thinking or their recognition of life rooted in a traditional culture, Baduk. It is expected that this study enables many people to understand the value and significance of Baduk metaphor and that many researches on this subject will be carried out in a variety of fields.

이 연구의 목적은 바둑을 통해 세상사를 비유하고, 바둑용어를 시사용어로 사용하는 현상을 ‘바둑 메타포’로 정의하고, 바둑을 통한 메타포가 갖는 의미를 탐색해 보려는 데 있다. 연구결과 는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국 사회에서는 바둑으로 세상사를 얘기하는 문화가 널리 퍼져 있다. 전략적이고 투 쟁적 성격을 띤 정치, 싸움 등에 관한 비유뿐만 아니라 신앙, 공부, 주식투자 등과 같은 다양한 분야의 현상에 대해서도 바둑에 빗대어 설명을 하는 경향이 있다. 이러한 사실은 바둑 메타포 가 광범위하게 사용되고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 둘째, 매스미디어에서는 포석, 정석, 자충수, 수순 등 30여 개의 바둑 전문용어를 시사용어로 사용하고 있다. 이 중에서 어떤 수의 특징을 나타내는 묘수, 악수, 무리수, 승부수 등 수의 명칭 에 관한 용어가 가장 많이 사용되고 있다. 셋째, 바둑 메타포를 통하여 세상사를 말하는 이유로 는 바둑과 삶이 닮았다는 유사성 인식, 친숙한 사물을 통한 비유의 필요성, 바둑 메타포를 통한 완곡어법의 효용성, 한국 사회에서의 바둑의 대중성을 들 수 있다. 미디어에서는 완곡어법의 효 용성을 인지하고 있고, 일반사람들은 바둑 메타포를 통해 자신의 주장을 알기 쉽게 설명하는 설득의 효과성을 감지하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 넷째, 바둑 메타포가 갖는 의미는 일반사람의 입장에서 볼 때 세상사의 이해 촉진, 바둑을 통한 시사점 습득 등을 들 수 있다. 바둑을 통해 복잡다단한 세상사를 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다면 바둑 메타포는 그 자체로 큰 의미가 있으며, 아울러 삶의 교훈이나 깨달음과 같은 시사점을 얻을 수 있다면 일석이조의 효과가 있다고 할 수 있다. 다섯째, 바둑 분야의 입장에서 보면, 바둑 메타포는 기존의 바둑상품과는 다른 새로운 상품 을 팬들에게 내놓는 의미가 있다. 레저와 스포츠로서의 바둑에 머물던 바둑 마케팅에서 삶의 비유와 풍자를 통한 문화적 상품으로서의 가능성을 제시하고 있다. 전통문화인 바둑에 뿌리박 힌 한국인의 사고방식과 삶에 대한 인식을 연구하는 도구로서도 활용될 수 있다. 이 연구를 통하여 바둑 메타포가 갖는 가치와 의미를 많은 사람들이 이해하고, 다양한 분야 에서 바둑 메타포에 관한 연구가 이루어지기를 기대한다.
