The purpose of this study was to shed light on elementary school students’ dating experiences through ethnographic interviews with six students, who had direct or indirect experiences of dating. Analysis of the interview data was carried out using Hatch’s inductive analysis method, from which eight themes were subsequently drawn. These themes were classified into four meaning categories, which are ‘ My pride is more important than you, even though I like you a lot.’, ‘I don’t feel comfortable alone with you.’, ‘The relationship of improving one’s image’, ‘Getting resources that can be applied to social interaction with the opposite sex’. Finally, the results were discussed with regard to their implications to the fields of both education, and counseling.

이 연구는 초등학생들의 이성교제 경험을 질적 연구를 통해 탐색하는 데 목적을 두었으며, 문화기술지(ethnography)의 방법으로 연구 문제에 접근하였다. 이를 위해 이성교제 경험이 있 거나 이성교제 모습을 가까이서 지켜본 경험이 있는 초등학교 5, 6학년 학생 6명을 연구에 참여시켰으며, 이들과 약 2～3주에 걸친 심층 면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료 는 Hatch의 ‘귀납적 분석’을 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과 초등학생들의 이성교제 경험에 대한 8가지 주제가 나타났다. 이후 8가지 주제에 대한 해석을 진행하였는데, 이를 통해 초등 학생들의 이성교제 경험에 담긴 의미를 도출하였다. 그들의 이성교제 경험에는 <아무리 좋 아도 내 자존심이 먼저>, <둘만의 어색함 피하기>, <수단으로서의 이성교제>, <이성과의 유연한 사교를 위한 자원 습득의 과정> 등의 의미가 담긴 것으로 해석되었다. 마지막으로 연구 결과가 교육과 상담의 측면에서 갖는 함의에 대해 논의하였다.
