Until recently, universities have made achievements in nurturing globally talented students in many developed countries. As in such countries, demands of global higher education is increasing and number of school-aged people is quickly decreasing in Korea, too. These phenomena have led Korean universities to shift their policies on globalization from out-bound to in-bound. Consequently, foreign students have been increased highly since 2004. Until now, many universities have offered various extra-curricula program not alone distinctive regular curricula, helping foreign students’ studies and lives. For example, many universities provided foreign students with various services such as helping of foreign student unions, more specialized orientations and many other supporting programs. As results, domestic students can have more chances to contact with foreign students than before and their activities with and understanding of people from other countries are increasing. As described above, we observed changes in number and dispersion of foreign students and extra-curricula programs of many universities in order to understand what kind of educational events are going on for foreign students. Based on these observations, we suggest several points to be discussed and what is to be done to improve extra-curricula programs for higher education for globalization in Korea. Also, we expect that current study may play a role a little bit in progress of general education.

세계화가 가속화되면서 미래사회에 글로벌 역량을 가진 인재를 양성하기 위한 대학들의 노력은 가시적인 성과들로 나타나고 있다. 고등교육에 대한 국제화 요구는 학령인구 급감의 추세와 맞물리면서 우리나라 대학들은 out-bound 국제화 중심의 전략을 수정하여 in-bound 국제화에 보다 중점을 두게 되었다. In-bound 국제화 전략으로 외국인 유학생이 급증함에 따라 주요 대학들은 외국학생을 위한 교과과정은 물론, 다양한 비교과 프로그램을 제공함으로서 외국학생들의 원만한 학습과 생활을 돕고 있다. 최근 들어 학생 자치회, 차별화된 오리엔테이션, 지원 프로그램 등으로 인해 외국학생과 한국 학생들이 함께 하는 활동들이 늘어나면서 다양한 경험을 공유하고 서로에 대한 이해를 넓혀나갈 수 있는 기회를 만들어 나가는 것은 고무적이다. 이 연구에서는 이처럼 국내 대학의 국제화 교육 실태를 파악하기 위해 외국인 유학생 증가추세와 분포 특성, 국내 주요 대학의 비교과 과정 운영사례 분석을 통한 특성을 도출하고, 해외 대학의 유학생을 위한 비교과과정의 운영사례를 살펴보았다. 그로부터 국내 대학의 국제화 교육과 관련된 쟁점을 도출하고, 비교과과정에서 개선할 방향을 제시하였다. In-bound 국제화 환경의 교육적 효과를 극대화 하려면 교과과정과 비교과과정을 연계한 통합적 모델을 모색하는 것이 바람직하다. 교과과정에 대해 진행한 연구와 함께, 비교과과정을 중심으로 진행한 본 연구는 이런 점에서 매우 의미가 크다고 할 수 있다. 또한 이 연구는 앞으로 교양교육의 발전에 조금이라도 기여할 것으로 판단된다.
