This article aims to show how American universities have overcome the myth of transience with respect to writing and extended the WAC programs across the colleges and universities. This investigation is a necessary procedure for second leap of Korean university’s writing education because Korean universities, even many writing instructors, are still deluded by the myth. It is a prevalent but mythical thought in Korean universities that the education of academic writing can be accomplished by one or two general writing courses. First of all, I’ll uncover the causes of the myth and expose the misunderstandings brought about by it(II), then survey the successful history of American WAC programs which had overcome the myth of transience(III), next examine various attempts to transplant WAC program to Korean universities and existing confusions(IV), and lastly lays emphasis on the writing community that corrects the century－old idea about writing and leads faculties into the WAC program(V).

이 글은 미국의 대학들이 글쓰기에 대한 일회성의 신화를 극복하고 그 대안으로 전공연계글쓰기(WAC) 프로그램을 확산시킨 과정을 살펴보고자한다. 이 과정은 한국 대학 글쓰기 교육의 2차 도약을 위해 우리가 한 번은 점검하고 넘어가야 할 부분이다. 왜냐하면 교양 글쓰기 한 두 강좌로 대학 글쓰기 교육을 완결하려 한다는 점에서 한국 대학은, 심지어는 글쓰기 전담 교수들마저, 여전히 역시 이 신화에 매몰되어 있기 때문이다. 이 글은 일회성의 신화가 어떻게 탄생하고 그것이 글쓰기에 대해 어떤 왜곡을 초래했는지를 살펴보고(II), 미국 대학의 WAC 프로그램은 어떤 과정을 통해 이 왜곡을 교정하며 성공적인 운동이 될 수 있었는지를 역사적 고찰을 통해 정리한 다음(III), 한국 대학의 WAC 도입 현황과 글쓰기에 대한 불분명한 시각을 드러내고(IV), 마지막으로 글쓰기 공동체의 역할이 시각 교정과 자발적 참여에 무엇보다도 중요함을 보이겠다.(V)
