The objective of this study was to understand chief of private education iInstitutions working in the unique situation of private education. For this purpose, this study tried to answer questions as follows. First, what kind of characteristic in the field of private education Institution?, Second, what kind of life are private education manager experiencing in the field of private education Institution? third, what kind of life are private education teachers educational experiencing in the field of private education Institution? what meanings do private education teachers’ experiences have? This study collected and analyzed cases of three people who manage private education institutions as well as various different data on private education using narrative inquiry as a research method, to understand what it was like to manage private education institutions. The analysis of the collected data shows that the managers at private education institutions simultaneously experience themselves as managers and as teachers, in the private education market where fierce competitions and symbiotic relationships occur. They put in effort to adjust to demands of customers and to survive in the private education market by strategically adopting changes. They don’t just perceive students as their business objects but as individuals with their own personalities, and contemplate each individual’s growth potential. Private Education Institution is a place where students strive to reach their full potential and teachers strive to be better teachers.

본 연구는 사교육이라는 특수한 현장에서 살아가는 사교육기관 원장의 경험에 대한 이해이다. 사교육기관 원장의 경험을 이해하기 위한 연구문제는 첫째, 사교육현장의 특성은 무엇인가? 둘째, 사교육기관 원장은 사교육기관의 경영자로서 어떤 경험을 하고 있는가? 셋째, 사교육기관 원장은 가르치는 사교육교사로서 어떤 교육적 경험을 하고 있으며, 그 경험은 ‘교사가 되어감’에 어떤 의미가 있는가? 이다. 연구자는 사교육기관의 원장과 교사역할을 겸하고 있는 사교육 교사들의 경험을 이해하기 위하여 내러티브 탐구방법으로 2010년 1월부터 2011년 1월까지 중소도시 사교육기관 원장 3명의 이야기와 사교육현장의 다양한 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 수집된 자료를 분석한 결과, 치열한 생존경쟁과 공생관계의 장인 사교육현장에서 사교육기관 원장은 사교육기관을 운영하는 경영자로서의 경험과 가르치는 교사로서의 경험을 동시에 한다. 사교육기관 원장은 사교육기관을 운영하는 경영자의 경험을 통해 교육선택자의 요구수용과 자신을 전략적으로 변화시키며 사교육시장에서 생존하려고 노력하고 있다. 사교육기관 원장은 경제적 이익을 위한 비즈니스적 가치를 중시하고 있지만, 다른 한편으로 교육적 가치를 추구하는 성향을 형성해가고 있다. 사교육기관은 학생에게 ‘성장가능성’의 측면도 존재하는 공간이며, 사교육교사에게는 보다 나은 교사가 되기 위해 노력하는 공간이기도 하다.
