Nowadays a lot of people lose their faith as the contemporary religions cannot interconnect the image of God to the inner religious belief of the modern human beings. So there is nothing which is able to convince them; the ultimate reality of the soul, of the god, or anything. As a consequence this age seems to be cut off from the sense of any such accepted central truth which would give coherence and meaning to the concerns of the individual, as the central truth is closely related with the image of God. Instead, popular 'isms' draw fanatical attention on the one hand, and pleasure, power, money, prestige on the other hand. Even a mere avoidance of pain may be elevated to the position of ruling principle by people. But analytical psychologist C.G.Jung warned that there is always danger that one-sided drives or man-made ideas may usurp the central authority. C.G.Jung was interested in the issue of religion, as the religion is good for human being as it always integrates many opposite pairs of human being's psychological factors. The religions are excellent psychotherapeutic system, as they treated enormous psychological problems in powerful images. But recently the mental health of human being is in danger with the decline of contemporary religious situation, because the image of God of contemporary religion cannot activates the Self in the psyche of a human being. As a fact, C.G.Jung distinguished image of God from God. For Jung God may be defined as the center and ordering-point of human being's life, and the image of God is that which a pastor preaches on the pulpit. He thought it is the Self-projection which is the most important psychological factor, so he called it 'God-within-us. Nevertheless the image of God is very important for a human being as it enables one to make his/her life firm and consistent. But he thought that the former cannot incite the latter. Therefore he insisted on the importance of another image of God which has more complete and total contents. For him, actual image of God Christians have is too anthropomorphic to reflect the living God who is ambivalent. Many contemporary problems come from it.

현대 사회에서 기독교는 그 전 시대에 비해서 영향력을 잃어가고 있으며, “신 죽음” 현상은 더 고조되고 있다. 그에 따라서 현대인들 가운데는 그 전까지 그들의 삶에 나아갈 방향을 제시해주고, 의미룰 제공해 주었던 종교적 가르침의 부재로 혼돈에 빠져 있거나, 본능적 욕구만 따라서 살면서 죄책감에 시달리거나, 불안과 우울 속에서 사는 경우가 많다. 스위스의 분석심리학자 C.G.융은 이런 현상은 현대 기독교가 현대인들이 무의식에서 요청하는 신의 이미지와 다른 신의 이미지를 제공하기 때문이라고 주장하였다. 왜냐하면 신의 이미지는 사람들이 형이상학적 신을 체험하게 하는데 중요한 도구가 되는데, 현대 기독교가 제시하는 신의 이미지는 현대인들로 하여금 형이상학적 신을 체험하게 하지 못한다는 것이다. 그에 의하면 신의 이미지는 무의식 속에 있는 자기의 원형상이며, 자기는 정신 요소 가운데서 가장 강력하고 전일한 실체로서 사람들에게 정신을 구성하는 수많은 대극적 요소들을 통합하게 하는 요소인데, 현대 기독교가 제시하는 신의 이미지는 사람들로 하여금 형이상학적 신을 체험하게 하면서 자기가 활성화되도록 하게 하지 못한다는 것이다. 그 중요한 이유 가운데 하나로서 융은 현대 기독교가 제시하는 신의 이미지가 너무 신인동성동형론적이라는 사실을 지적한다. 신에 대한 인간의 원초적인 감정은 독일의 종교철학자 루돌프 오토가 주장한 대로 어머어마한 신비이면서 동시에 매혹적인 신비, 즉 양가적 감정인데 지금 기독교가 제시하는 신의 이미지는 너무 인간과 모습이나 성질이 비슷한 신인동형동성론적인 신이라는 것이다. 따라서 사람들은 기독교에서 제시하는 신의 이미지 앞에서 제대로 된 신을 체험하지 못하고, 무엇인가 부족한 듯한 느낌을 가지고 떠나거나, 그 신을 자신의 욕구에 맞춰서 소유하려고 한다. 신과 올바른 관계를 맺지 못하고, 신으로부터 세속적 욕망을 떠난 거듭남을 체험하지 못하는 것이다. 융은 현대 사회의 많은 문제들은 여기에서 비롯된다고 주장한다. 그러면서 그는 현대인들의 영적 공허 상태는 심각하며, 이것을 타파하기 위해서는 기독교가 현대인들의 무의식에서 요청하는 새로운 신의 이미지를 제시해야 한다고 주장한다. 이런 상황에서 폴 틸리히의 주장은 신학과 분석심리학의 대화 가능성을 제시한다. 그는 신을 존재의 힘과 기반, 모든 피조물들을 생명의 목적인 영으로 이끌고, 창조를 완성시키기 위해서 모든 피조물들과 관계를 맺는 존재-자체라고 설정한다. 그리고 인간은 본질로부터 실존으로 실현되면서 개인화와 참여, 역동성과 형식, 자유와 운명이라는 양극적인 존재론적 대극 사이에서 비존재의 위협을 받는 유한한 존재로 본다. 그래서 인간은 새로운 존재인 그리스도에 참여하여 영적 존재가 되어야 한다. 우리는 이런 틸리히의 주장에서 융의 분석심리학 사상과 대화할 수 있는 여지를 본다. 즉 틸리히의 신과 융의 자기, 인간의 존재론적 대극과 분석심리학의 대극적 구조, 틸리히의 구원론과 융의 개성화 과정의 유비 가능성을 보는 것이다. 그러나 여기서 우리는 두 사람 사이의 근본적 비교보다는 과거의 신인동형동성론적 신관보다는 새로운 신 이해를 통해서 현대인들이 어떻게 현대 사회의 정신적 곤경에서 나올 수 있을 것인가를 고찰하고자 한다.
