The purpose of this study was to analyze authentic and realistic experiences of a sixth grade homeroom teacher's work life and to further understand elementary school teaching professions. The approach was to enhance the culture of teachers in elementary school. This study was conducted on sixth grade homeroom teachers through a qualitative research. It shows their thoughts and impressions based on the experiences they encountered both in the classroom and within the school. Sixth grade homeroom teachers working in an elementary school located in Seoul, helped us to conduct this research. It was conducted for seven months through a Narrative Inquiry, as one of the methods in qualitative research. Based on the results, the conclusions found in a sixth grade homeroom teachers' life were as follows. First, seniority played a vital role in how teachers are treated. Second, teachers are exhausted with heavy workloads. Third, teachers struggled dealing with students' behaviors due to adolescence that students normally go through in this grade. Fourth, teachers found it challenging to accommodate every students' abilities, especially with a demanding and advanced curriculum, and finally, teachers are experiencing receded relationships with their students' parents. The results were similar to common teaching professions in Korean elementary schools. However, this study showed that sixth grade homeroom teachers felt compulsed to teach grade six, which involves heavy workloads, due to a lack of seniority within their school. Lastly, the study also revealed that first to fifth grade interactions between students and teachers was substantially different from those at the sixth grade.

본 연구는 초등학교 6학년 담임교사들에 대한 질적 연구이다. 6학년 담임교사들이 담임업무를 수행하면서 겪는 교직생활의 경험과 그에 대한 생각과 느낌을 솔직하게 보여줌으로써, 교직생활의 의미를 찾아내고 초등학교 교직문화에 대한 이해를 넓히는 것이 목적이다. 나아가 심화되고 있는 6학년 담임배정 기피 현상에 대한 해결책을 제시하여 올바른 초등학교 교직문화를 만들고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 서울에 위치한 A초등학교 6학년 담임교사 3명을 대상으로 7개월 동안 질적 연구의 한 방법인 내러티브 탐구를 수행하였다. 연구 결과 나타난 초등학교 6학년 담임교사의 교직생활 특징으로는, 첫째, 철저한 연공서열에 따른 6학년 담임배정, 둘째, 많은 업무에 지친 6학년 담임교사, 셋째, 사춘기 아이들로 인한 힘겨운 생활지도, 넷째, 어려워지는 교과내용, 심화되는 학력격차, 다섯째, 점점 멀어지는 학부모와의 관계였다. 이러한 점들은 기존의 연구에서 밝혀진 초등학교 교직문화의 일반적인 특징과 유사한 것이다. 그러나 6학년 담임교사들은 학년말 담임배정 과정이 합리적이지 못한 방법으로 이루어지는 것에 강한 피해의식을 가지고 있으며, 6학년 업무에 상당한 부담을 느끼고 있었다. 또한 사춘기로 접어든 6학년 학생들의 생활지도에 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다는 점에서 타학년 담임교사와 차별성을 보여주었다.
