This article is review on Lee ji-Sung's thesis Suffering of Otherness. Her thesis dealt with bullying as a social evil exposed in our educational fields, especially middle school and high school. And she has discussed about bullying in terms of Philosophy or Ethics. Through that discussing, she was aimed to find a clue for resolution about bullying. Her thesis is sufficient for academic value because it suggested a logic of response and new perspective about the problem of bullying. And also, In that context, she has dealt with Martha Nussbaum and Susan Sontag's theory of Sympathy. Now I try to add some facts with respect to Lee ji-Sung's discussion about theory of Sympathy. Firstly, in terms of Martha Nussbaum's theory of Sympathy, what is the difference compare to Susan Sontag's viewpoint. Secondly, In genealogy of theory of Sympathy, what is the difference among traditional viewpoints, that is Adam Smith(1723-1790), David Hume(1711-1776), Rousseau, Jean Jacques(1712-1778), and Arthur Schopenhauer(1788-1860). On the other hand, Max Scheler(1874-1928) criticized traditional theory of Sympathy and insisted his new theory of Sympathy. Lastly, what kind of model of education can be possible in our educational fields comparing to Socratic Method and Sontag's on photography.

이 글은 이지성 교수의 논문 ｢타인의 고통, 연민을 넘어 공감으로｣에 대한 논평형식의 논문이다. 이 교수의 논문은 우리 사회, 특히 교육 현장에서 벌어지고 있는 고질적인 병폐 가운데 하나인 왕따 문제를 철학자의 시선, 윤리학자의 시선에서 진단하고 있다. 또한 이 문제를 해결하기 위한 실마리를 찾고자 피해자/가해자/방관자의 견고한 고리를 풀어보려는 시도의 논문이다. 그간 철학이 사변적, 추상적, 비현실적이라는 비난을 익숙하게 들어오던 차에, 현실문제에 직접 개입하여 대응논리를 구체적으로 제시하고, 이 문제에 대한 인식을 새롭게 할 수 있는 계기를 심어주고 있는 이 논문은 바로 그 점에서 높은 학술적 가치를 받기에 충분하다. 이제 논평자는 이지성 교수의 왕따 문제와 관련하여 누스바움과 손택의 공감 감정 혹은 공감의 윤리에 대한 논의에서 몇 가지 사항을 추가하고자 한다. 누스바움과 손택의 공감의 윤리(학)의 계보학적 특징은 무엇인가? 다시 말해, 애덤 스미스, 흄, 루소, 쇼펜하우어로 대표되는 ‘공감의 윤리학’과는 어떤 차이가 있는가? 나아가 이러한 기존의 공감의 윤리학을 비판하고 새로운 ‘공감이론’을 주장하는 막스 셸러(Max Scheler 1874-1928)의 입장과는 어떤 차이가 있는가? 이와 덧붙여, 좋은 감정(공감, 사랑, 연민)을 배양하고 나쁜 감정(원한, 미움, 혐오)을 완화시키는데 결정적 역할을 하는 공교육의 목표설정, 즉 소크라테스식의 문답식 교육과 타고르식의 예술 교육, 손택 식의 사진(예술) 교육 이외의 어떤 형태의 교육 모델이 가능할지에 대해 언급하고자 한다.
