This study was performed to screen whitening effects of lactic acid bacteria, L. casei associate with antioxidative activities because whitening activity of lactic acid bacteria was not much known even though it has antioxidant activity. First, the Cytotoxicity of the water extract from L. casei was measured as 7.6% at 10.0% concentration, and tyrosinase inhibition activity was about 30%. DPPH radical scavenging activity and the strong reducing power of the extracts were also measured as 14.9% and 76%, respectively. However, the L. casei extract showed 58.6% of melanin synthesis activity in adding 1.0 mg/mL whose value were somewhat low in considering relatively high DPPH activity along with good tyrosinase inhibtion. It implies that L. casei could be considered as a candidate of cosmeceutical resources by optimizing its antioxidant activities.
