The two types of diabetes are referred as type Ⅰ and type Ⅱ. Type Ⅰ diabetes results from the destruction of pancreatic β cells by ROS(Reactive oxygen species)-induced damage. Various environmental stresses lead to excessive production of reactive oxygen species(ROS) causing progressive oxidative damage and ultimately apoptosis in pancreatic beta-cells. Apoptotic cells undergo changes in morphology and biochemistry such as membrane blebbing, cell membrane reversion, DNA fragmentations etc. Medicinal plants have been shown to prevent apoptosis in a number of cell types, such as lymphocytes, neurons and vascular endothelial cells. Among these plants, mulberry has been studied for their pharmacological properties in regulating blood glucose concentration and pancreatic beta-cell death induced by oxidative damage. In this study, we investigated anti-diabetic effect of mulberry extracts in oxidative damaged pancreatic MIN6N beta-calls.
