World-wide efforts have been made to adopt BIM (Building Information modeling) to improve the efficiency of construction project management processes lively. BIM means a shared digitized expression which provides a reliable source to make an informed decision over a physical or a functional character across all construction sectors including design, civil engineering and plant construction. The Korean Public Procurement Service mandates to adopt BIM for over 50 billion won public construction projects from 2012, and this will be extended to every project initiated by the Korean Public Procurement Service from 2016.
This paper intends to explore probable barriers which can be faced at the initial stage of BIM adoption, and suggest measures which can cope with them. For this, the BIM utilization strategies and action plans devised by governments in US and UK where adopt BIM earlier than Korea were analyzed. Based on the results of comparative analysis between US and UK, the proper guideline for BIM adoption in Korea will be suggested.

세계적으로 건설 프로젝트 프로세스 관리 효율성을 높이기 위한 BIM (Building Information Modeling) 도입이 활발히 진행되고 있다. BIM은 건축, 토목, 플랜트를 포함한 건설 전 분야에서 시설물 객체의 물리적 혹은 기능적 특성으로서 의사결정을 하는데 신뢰할 만한 근거를 제공하도록 공유된 디지털 표현을 말한다. 한국 조달청은 2012년부터 500억 이상의 공공건축 프로젝트에 BIM 사용을 의무화하며, 2016년부터는 이를 확대하여 조달청이 발주하는 모든 건축 프로젝트에 BIM 설계 적용을 의무화할 계획이다.
본 논문은 한국 건설의 BIM 도입 시 수반될 수 있는 문제점들과 그에 대한 대응책을 제시하고자 한다. BIM 도입 초기 단계에서 직면할 수 있는 문제점들을 사전에 파악하고, 그에 대한 가능한 대응방안을 제시한다. 이를 위해 한국보다 앞서 건설 효율화 및 국제 건설 시장 선점을 위해 BIM 활용방안을 활발히 논의 중인 세계 건설 매출액의 1/3을 차지하는 미국과 유럽 건설 시장을 주도하는 영국의 BIM 활용에 대한 정책과 전략 그리고 단계별 실행계획을 비교 분석하여, 한국의 BIM 도입 방향을 제시한다.
