Teachers' Multicultural Attitudes in Korea

1. Objective The Ministry of Science, Education and Technology (Korea) has reported that the number of students of multicultural family is 46,954 in 2012. It has increased 21%(8,276) over last year. Therefore, there should be an appropriate way to help those students adjust to school. To do that, understanding teacher’s recognition on those students should be done in prior to others. The purpose of the study was to examine teacher's multicultural attitudes and multicutural efficacy and 2) to investigate the effects of teachers experience in multiculture on teacher's multicultural attitudes and multicutural efficacy. 2. Methods The study used the Teacher Multicultural Attitude Survey(TMAS) and the Multicultural Efficacy Scale(MES) with revised and modified scales by Choi and Mo. The questionnaires were administrated to 348 elementary and secondary teachers. 3. Results Most of the participants had positive attitudes about different cultures. However, many of the teachers were having heavy pressure from teaching culturally diverse group. Also, respondents believed that the current multicultural traning for teachers do not provide practical skills for multicultural education. Most of respondents realized the importance of training program for multicultural education. 4. Conclusion From better multicultural education, enhancement of teacher's multicultural attitudes and efficacy is urgent. However, from the result of this study, it was found that current teachers' training program for multicultural education do not meet the needs of teachers. Therefore, teachers' training program for multicultural education should focus more on enhancing teachers' multicultural attitudes and efficacy.
