This paper has its historical meaning in the point that it is the first study of Chosun Travel Agency which is considered to be the first travel agency in our country. Therefore it will be the base for studying in earnest the history of travel industry for the period after liberation from Japanese colony, which has been left blank until now. Chosun Travel Agency was established by Korean’s reorganizing Chosun branch of Japanese Travel Institute and it is considered to be the first travel agency in our country. It tried to let Korea which was a new independent country to be known to the world through activity of traveling and additional activity to promote travel. And as it was converted to a foundation, it changed its name to Daehan Travel Agency. In this process, it established its position as one of extra governmental organization as Huh Jung was selected to be the president of Daehan Travel Agency. The places which Chosun Travel Agency chose for traveling were usually the famous mountains and scenic attractions and the purpose of travel was the visit to historical remains or hiking. Additionally it seems that Chosun Travel Agency led the popularization of travel by resuming the bus travel which had been paused since 1949.

본고는 해방 이후 우리나라 최초의 여행사라 일컬어지는 조선여행사에 대한 최초의 연구라는 점에서 연구사적 의의를 갖는다고 생각된다. 그리하여 지금까지 공백으로 남아있던 해방 이후 우리나라 관광사에 대해 본격적으로 연구할 수 있는 토대가 될 수 있을 것이다. 조선여행사는 일본여행협회 조선지부를 해방 직후 조선인 직원들이 접수하여 설립한 것으로 해방 이후 우리나라 최초의 여행사라 일컬어진다. 설립 이후 조선여행사는 관광객 모집을 통한 관광 활동과 관광진흥을 위한 주변 활동을 통하여 신생 독립국인 대한민국을 세계에 알리고자 하였다. 그리고 1949년 재단법인으로 전환하면서 社名을 대한여행사로 변경하였다. 이 과정에서 대한여행사의 총재로 허정이 취임함으로써 대한여행사의 정부의 외곽조직으로서의 성격을 분명히 하였다. 조선여행사가 행한 관광객 모집 방식에 의한 관광활동의 주된 대상지는 주로 국내의 명산이나 명승지였으며, 그 목적은 고적탐방과 하이킹에 두고 있었다. 그리고 1949년에는 해방 이후 중단되었던 관광버스를 다시 운행함으로써 관광 대중화에 앞장서고 있음도 보여주었다.
