This is an empirical study aimed at exploring how students interpret problems related to environmental issues and understanding their environmental moral sensitivity on the moral aspects of environmental problems. This study analyzed data collected through interviews with 79 students in order to examine problem interpretation of environmental issues and environmental moral sensitivity, These students included those from 2nd and 5th grades in elementary schools, 1st and 2nd grades in middle schools, and second-year high school students. The results of the study divided the students’ problem interpretation into four categories, including those with no issues, those with an egocentric interpretation, those with a non-environment related moral interpretation, and those with an environment related interpretation. In accordance with the consideration of the subjects and their relationship with the environment, the students’ environmental moral sensitivity was divided into five categories: no issues, egoistic, non-, anthropocentric, and eco-centric. Most students recognized and interpreted environmental issues as morally problematic situations and their environmental mortal sensitivity took unique shapes according to morally considered objects (human, living things, and nature), as well as individual moral references (duty, consequence, and care). The results showed little differences between the sexes, while there was difference by age concerning object of consideration and the pattern of problem interpretation. This study is significant because it identified through an empirical analysis the fact that environmental issues were recognized and interpreted as moral problems, and because it is the first exploratory study on environmental moral sensitivity in Korea. This study implies that environmental moral education must integrate cognitive morality and affective morality, consider the ages of targeted education groups, and expand objects of moral consideration from humans and living animals to nature along with an age increase.

이 연구는 환경쟁점에 대한 학생들의 해석과 환경을 고려하여 도덕적 측면에서 문제를 인식하고해석하는 환경도덕민감성에 대하여 깊이 있게 이해하기 위한 경험적 연구이다. 환경쟁점에서의 문제 해석과 환경도덕민감성을 알아보기 위하여 이 연구에서는 초 2, 초 5, 중 1-2, 고 2 학생의 총79명의 학생을 대상으로 두 가지 환경쟁점 딜레마에 대한 인터뷰를 통하여 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 연구 결과 환경쟁점에 대한 학생들의 문제 해석은 내재된 문제를 해석하지 못하는 문제없음의 해석, 이기적 해석, 환경 무관 도덕적 해석, 환경 고려 도덕적 해석의 네 가지로 크게 구분되었으며, 고려 대상과 환경과의 관련 여부에 따라 문제없음, 이기적 해석, 환경과 무관한 도덕민감성, 인간중심적 환경도덕민감성, 생태중심적 환경도덕민감성의 다섯 가지로 구분되었다. 많은 학생들은 환경쟁점을 환경과 관련된 도덕적 문제 상황으로 인식하고 해석하였으며, 환경쟁점에 내재된 도덕적 문제를 해석하는 환경도덕민감성은 도덕적 고려 대상(인간, 생물, 자연)과 개인의 도덕적 준거틀(의무, 결과, 배려)에 따라 각각 독특한 모습으로 나타났다. 학생들의 환경도덕민감성은 성별에 따라서는 크게 차이가 나타나지 않았지만, 연령에 따라 도덕적으로 고려하는 대상과 문제 해석패턴에서 차이를 보였으며, 연령과 관계없이 인간중심적 고려는 결과에 기초한 해석이 많았고, 생태중심적 고려는 의무에 기초한 해석이 많았다. 연령에 따른 환경도덕민감성의 차이는 인지도덕발달의 영향으로 이해할 수 있으며, 결과에 기초한 인간중심적 환경도덕민감성은 통합적 관점이 부족하여 환경문제 해결에 한계를 지닌다. 이 연구는 환경쟁점이 실제로 도덕적 문제로 인식되고 해석됨을 경험적 연구를 통하여 확인하고 환경도덕민감성에 대하여 처음으로 탐색한 연구라는 점에서 의의가 있다. 이 연구의 결과는 인지적 도덕성과 정의적 도덕성이 통합된 환경윤리교육이 실시되어야 하고, 학생 연령에 따라 적합한 환경윤리교육이 필요함을 시사한다.
