This study aims to examine the effects of the character strengths on depression and anxiety between Christian university students and non-Christian ones. The population of this study was limited to 290 university students examined by Inventory of Strengths, Self-Rating Depression Scale, and State-Trait anxiety Inventory. The findings of the study are as follows. First, there were significant differences statistically between Christian and non-Christian in 19 characters strengths except open-mindedness, persistence, authenticity, self-regulation, and fairness. Second, there was a negative correlation between most character strengths and the depression of university students. Optimism, appreciation of beauty and excellence, self-regulation and prudence explained the depression of Christian university students. However, optimism explained the depression of non-Christian ones. Third, the anxiety of university students had negative correlation with most character strengths. Optimism explained the anxiety of Christian university students, while love and self-regulation explained that of non-Christian ones. Therefore, the character strengths of university students are so effective variables to decrease depression and anxiety that a differentiated counseling should be given to them.

본 연구는 기독대학생과 일반대학생의 성격강점이 우울과 불안에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 연구대상은 대학생 290명이었으며, 성격강점척도, 우울척도, 불안척도를 사용하여 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기독대학생과 일반대학생의 성격강점의 차이를 검증한 결과, 개방성, 끈기, 진실성, 자기조절, 공정성을 제외한 19개의 강점에서 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 대학생의 우울은 대부분의 성격강점과 부적상관을 보였고, 기독대학생은 낙관성, 감상력, 자기조절, 신중성이, 일반대학생은 낙관성과 시민정신이 우울을 유의미하게 설명하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 대학생의 불안은 대부분의 성격강점과 부적상관이었고, 기독대학생은 낙관성이, 일반대학생은 사랑과 자기조절이 불안을 유의미하게 설명하는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 대학생의 긍정요인인 성격강점이 우울과 불안의 감소에 효과적인 변인임을 검증함과 동시에 기독교 유무에 따른 차별화된 상담 개입의 필요성에 대한 이해를 제공하였다는데 그 의의가 있다.
